Sen. Jim Webb Sways from Left's Energy Playbook

As oil trades in excess of $135 a barrel the theme of the left has been to invest in “green alternative energy solutions.” But Sen. James Webb, D-Va., touted as a rising star in the liberal movement, isn’t playing along.

“We need to look at nuclear,” Webb said on July 8. “We need to have a sensible nuclear policy. We haven’t built a nuclear power plant in this country in 30 years. Technology’s changed a lot in the last 30 years. You know when I was saying this two years ago, as some people in this room know – there were people who were Democrats whose hair would get on fire when I started talking about nuclear. But it’s sensible.”

Webb delivered those comments at Politics & Prose bookstore in Washington, D.C., where he was promoting his new book, "A Time to Fight: Reclaiming a Fair and Just America.”

Sen. Webb, a Democrat, seems more sensible than Sen. John Warner, a Republican..err..of the Boxer-Lieberman-Warner Global Warming edict.

I still can’t say that I’m real enthusiastic about Jim Webb, but on this occasion the SOB is talking good common sense.

Good God, what’s next? LOL

Holy Jesus! A democrat making sense! Honest to God no BS sense. Perhaps there is hope.
Now if only we could get him to go for drilling and cease support for corn ethanol...

That is another democrat that is getting heat I am sure from his constituents...and changing his mind.. Dickie Durbin and Harry are thinking differently as well I read.

This situation looks like a rat misinformation campaign. The rats have allowed a few to stray from the party line knowing that a vote will never surface. The rats use weasel words like "should consider nuclear" and "open to increased drilling". I will change my mind when a reasonable minority of rats loudly proclaims "Drill here, drill now, pay less!" The rats still overwhelmingly oppose domestic energy development. The rats are carrying the water for their enviromental obstructionists.

I’m glad John Warner is retiring, whether Gilmore wins or loses. Warner was one of the loudest Repubs arguing for a withdrawal from Iraq before the surge. In fact, he didn’t initially support the surge at all, he only begrudgingly went along when he knew he could not force Bush (translated, he couldn’t round up enough Repub votes) to set in place a timetable for a US troop withdrawal. Happy retirement Senator, see ya.

First sensable thing I’ve ever heard from our new Senator.

I read Webb was open to drilling off the coast of Virginia, but I have been unable to get a confirmation. Who knows.

Bottom-line, the dems can obstruct energy development for only so long before the nation will implode. If they don’t like oil, or other carbon fuels, they sure as heck better start proposing realistic options, like nuclear, or they will be run out of Washington on a rail. Unlike many issues, the inability to buy fuel for heating and transportation will drive people to rebellion..and Congress will be one of the first to feel the heat.

Who touted Jim Webb as a "rising star in the liberal movement"?

I always figured him as a moderate to right Democrat.

Well, I'm no Jim Webb fan. He was and is utterly wrong about the war in Iraq and on terror in general.

However, if the Republican Eunuchs are going to sit idly by with their thumbs up their arses and mouths sewn shut for fear of offending Keith Olberman then Webb will have to do as the sane side of the energy policy debate.

Patooey!

You are absolutly correct.

Look at the buzz words, “sensible” nuclear policy (as well as “responsible” oil drilling) could mean just about anything. They may talk up a good game on these policies but when it comes down to getting anything of substance done no one will be able to overcome the “sensible” and “responsible” things that these creatures seek.

I’m not actually expecting anything to change and it looks like he doesn’t really WANT to change his views. Reality is a powerful thing though. One can only hope that Mr. Webb is actually being sensible though and adopting nuclear power.

What’s next? The end of the world.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Webb is a sell out, slime ball, opportunist, braggart with a huge forehead.

His opponent in the last election, George Allen. I don’t think you will find any evidence of of the former governor referring to Webb as “moderate to right”, but lots of citations with liberal in them.

Agreed...given a choice between a RINO and an honest, honorable Democrat, I'd vote for the Democrat. About the only one that comes to mind is...wait...wait...I'm thinking...

...Zell Miller. Damn, that was hard!

I heard that David Petraeus leans Democrat.

There was a push for him to be Barack Hussein Obama’s running mate.

They’re starting to cave. They can see the handwriting on the wall. Energy is a winning issue for Republicans and the polls are beginning to show it. Republicans need to keep up the drumbeat.
