China warns Sarkozy not to see Dalai Lama

PARIS: President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, whose office announced Wednesday that he would, after all, attend the opening ceremonies of Beijing's Olympic Games, was warned by China on Tuesday not to meet with the Dalai Lama in France next month.

China's ambassador to France, Kong Quan, told reporters there would be "serious consequences" for Chinese-French relations if Sarkozy meets the Dalai Lama, asserting that it "would be contrary to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs."

Sarkozy has been vague on whether he will meet personally with the Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader in exile, regarded by China as a renegade "splittist" who has advocated resistance to China's sovereignty.

China has repeatedly accused the Dalai Lama and his subordinates of instigating anti-Chinese riots in Tibet three months ago and encouraging a boycott of the Beijing Olympics, which the Dalai Lama has denied. Representatives of both sides recently resumed suspended reconciliation talks.

So now China is running the world, in their minds. Telling other nations what to do and not to do.

And of course, our State Department thinks China is a friend, kinda like Saudi Arabia (barf), and that they are not really a threat.....

Just ask Obama — he will want to negotiate and pander to China and our other blatant enemies. Not to worry — he will have it all under control in no time...

Sarkozy, I hope, flipped China off. If I were him I’d have a picture kissing the Dali Lama on the cheek.

Why? Are they afraid he’ll promise Nic total consciousness on his deathbed?

I join you in hoping that Sarkozy flips China off.

I was just reading William Manchester's biography of Winston Churchill. In about 1932, the British Ambassador (I forget his name) to Germany was seen by the Nazis as "not friendly to their interests" and Hitler requested that Britain replace the ambassador.

Manchester, at this point, makes an aside that any normal country would have made it quite clear to the Nazis that Britain chose its ambassadors, and that input on this matter was not welcomed from foreign heads of state. But, he goes on, the Baldwin government immediately recalled their ambassador and replaced him with someone who -- in France -- quickly not the nickname: Monsieur J'aime Berlin.

It wasn't a good decision.

Soooo, let’s see in Sarkozy is a different type of french man. Has he been neutered like the vast majority of frenchmen or does he actually have a set of nads?

It just ticks me off that anyone especially a country would behave in such a way as if the world is to take their feelings into consideration. What are they going to do exactly if we have a Dalai Lama lovefest? Cut off our supply of lomein and lead painted toys? Use it as an excuse to attack Taiwan? It is too bad we didn’t take out the reds when we had the chance. General Douglas MacArthur was right. He made some mistakes underestimating the Chinese initially but he understood the need to totally destroy the enemy. If he hadn’t been fired we’d have a different world today.

That sounds like China trying to intimidate a sovereign France. That should be reason enough for Quan to be sent home for a couple of weeks of "time out". And upon his return, he should be called to a meeting with Sarkozy, and then left waiting while Sarkozy meets with the Dalai Lama.

The mere fact that China tried to tell the French not to do it, should be reason enough to do it. Just to make a point.

At times, the Chinese government can do really dumb things. Even if Sarkozy never had any plans to meet the Dalai Lama, not he will have to just the send a message to China.
