FORMER Atlanta Falcons star quarterback Michael Vick has filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11. His career derailed by convictions on federal charges related to running a dog-fighting ring, Vick is broke. The bankruptcy filing says that his assets are between $10 million and $50 million, and his debts are in the same range. He's now serving a 23-month sentence in Leavenworth.

Meanwhile, the 49 pit bulls seized from Vick's Bad Newz Kennel in Surry County are living the high life. Many experts said that the former fighting dogs should be euthanized, but, instead, a judge ordered each dog individually evaluated. As a result, only one was deemed too vicious to help; another had to be put down because it was sick.

In fact, the disbursal of the Bad Newz Kennel has been Good Newz for the dogs and researchers, who are studying the pits to find out just if and how these gladiators can be rehabilitated.

Of the 47 surviving dogs, 22 are at an animal sanctuary in Utah, and 25 went to foster homes. One is now a gentle therapy dog, another is in training for "flying disc" competitions, and others have happily adapted to family life, reports The Washington Post.

So far, so good. Pit bulls are not an easy breed and it takes careful, responsible, intelligent handling to keep their aggression in check. This, sadly, was the opposite

I love a happy ending.

So do I. I am delighted in Vick's misfortune. Reaping the rewards of a scumbag/thug life. Enjoy Mike!

No need to wish him death. He was already on the hotseat because he was a mediocre QB who couldn’t live up to the hype. His playing days are over. I’m sure a career in HipHop is next for him, seeing as how he has no musical talent...

I still hold out hope that Vick meets a violent death in prison.

For abusing and fighting dogs? The death penalty? I think your value system is more screwed up then his. And his is pretty messed up.

I think this is another one of his scams to get out of paying his bills, I don’t really think he’s out of money. Maybe I’m being too cynical.

I love dogs. But why is dog or cock fighting a federal crime?

He may not get that, but at least he's not doing easy time. Leavenworth is not a fun place.

Because the public doesn’t like dog and cock fighting so legislatures passed laws against it.

I love dogs. But why is dog or cock fighting a federal crime?

They fight to the death...which is rare in the animal kingdom. Species of fowl do not have razor-sharp steel spurs to kill each other; canines, social mammals, will gather in packs and establish alpha-beta hierarchy rank social orders and will fight but usually only until it is clear which one is superior. So-called pitbull terriers have been bred basically to disregard that fact when in the pit and will fight until exhaustion which often results in death.

"I love dogs. But why is dog or cock fighting a federal crime?"

In and of itself it's not...it's when the animals are transported across state lines that the feds get involved. From the Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act:

`(1) IN GENERAL- Except as provided in paragraph (2), it shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly sponsor or exhibit an animal in an animal fighting venture, if any animal in the venture was moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

`(2) SPECIAL RULE FOR CERTAIN STATES- With respect to fighting ventures involving live birds in a State where it would not be in violation of the law, it shall be unlawful under this subsection for a person to sponsor or exhibit a bird in the fighting venture only if the person knew that any bird in the fighting venture was knowingly bought, sold, delivered, transported, or received in interstate or foreign commerce for the purpose of participation in the fighting venture.

No need to wish him death.

There are many other things I could wish him. However, as this is a family-friendly website, death was the least offensive of all of the things I could list.

His playing days are over.

I hope you are right. But given how a fair number of professional athletes have significant criminal histories, I sincerely believe that Vick will be able to resume playing upon finishing prison.

Another NFL thug, Chris Henry has asked the taxpayers of Hamilton County to pay for a transcript of his current trial, citing no money.

Which is apparently the opposite of mo money, or something like that.

Thugs and drugs. Nothing but trouble and not worth it.
