Forced servitude in America?
LA Times ^ | 8 July 2008 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 07/08/2008 6:47:03 AM PDT by shrinkermd

There's a weird irony at work when Sen. Barack Obama, the black presidential candidate who will allegedly scrub the stain of racism from the nation, vows to run afoul of the constitutional amendment that abolished slavery

...In his speech on national service Wednesday at the University of Colorado, Obama promised that as president he would "set a goal for all American middle and high school students to perform 50 hours of service a year, and for all college students to perform 100 hours of service a year."

He would see that these goals are met by, among other things, attaching strings to federal education dollars.

It's funny that, when the right seeks to use the government to impose its values, the left screams about brainwashing and propaganda. When the left tries it, the right thunders about social engineering. But when left and right agree -- as seems to be the case on national service -- who's left to complain? As ever, the slipperiest slopes are greased with the snake oil of "bipartisanship."

After all, Obama's hardly alone. Sen. John McCain is a passionate supporter of Washington-led (and paid-for) "volunteerism," as is President Bush. Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) and John Edwards

Perhaps thanks to the JFK cult, which sees the refrain "Ask not what your country can do for you ..." as an all-purpose writ for social meddling, even the idealistic hipster crowd is on board. Devotees of Rolling Stone and MTV, who normally preen like cats in a pool of sunshine over their alleged libertarianism when the issue is sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, see nothing wrong, and everything right, with involuntary servitude -- as long as we just call it "voluntary."

New slogan for ObamaNation 2008:

“Ask not what you can do for your country- your country will tell you when and where to report for service!”

It is sad to see many good Americans falling for this stuff. They think they are going to get a military draft but what we will end up is every 18 year old spending two years of their lives painting welfare moms’ houses.

Mickey O:
“Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zone . . . Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual - uninvolved, uninformed.”

....today’s goals will become tomorrow’s quotas.

Leftists don’t understand the difference.

Just like they don’t understand the difference between charity and forced wealth re-distribution.

Were I still a young man... I'd note that 5 or 6 of the 10 wealthiest people in the US aren't college grads (lead by #1 college dropout Bill Gates).

Best guess is about 2/3 of the students in colleges and universities in the US aren't learning much that's actually useful in the real world.

My Phi Beta Kappa BA daughter has spent the last 2 years at local community colleges acquiring useful information.

poverty pimps (aka “community activists”) do not join the Peace Corps - no money in that

They just charge big fees to give speeches to college kids and community groups and tell THEM to join the Peace Corps

What is wrong with liberals. Do they think people do nothing without a “call to volunteerism”? Do people not help the elderly or help their neighbors? Most of the people I know volunteer at church and do important things like take care and school their children. I think a good start would be a call for people to take care of their own communities. They could start by snitching on the local hooligans and helping the cops. We just had a shooting at a swimming pool north of here and last I heard the perp had not been identified even though their were 40 some people there.

I’m tired of the moralizing by liberals. They do things that amount to absolutely nothing on the scale of affecting lives in real ways. Do they have nothing to do? Do they not work? Obama can go play with himself and molest rats or something for all I care about his call for national service.

I always thought that compulsory volunteerism was trademarked by the Soviet Union.

Now, it is in every school near you.

"Forced servitude will forever turn people off to volunteering"

Forced servitude contributions to the United Way will forever turns people off to volunteering their hard earned cash due to coercion and intimidation by their employers.

For those who love to volunteer in the same manner, Obama...yo mamma...is your man!

Last time I checked, I was in forced servitude until sometme in May, at which point I stopped working for the Government and stared working for my family.

Brought to you by the same people who love Gandhi's principles of nonviolence, but somehow never see that government forced action IS violence.

Does this mean that “Si se pueda” will be replaced by the new slogan “Arbeit macht frei”?

You'll never view Gandhi the same way if you read this.

Here's one paragraph:

I cannot honestly say I had any reasonable expectation that the film would show scenes of Gandhi's pretty teenage girl followers fighting "hysterically" (the word was used) for the honor of sleeping naked with the Mahatma and cuddling the nude septuagenarian in their arms. (Gandhi was "testing" his vow of chastity in order to gain moral strength for his mighty struggle with Jinnah.) When told there was a man named Freud who said that, despite his declared intention, Gandhi might actually be *enjoying* the caresses of the naked girls, Gandhi continued, unperturbed. Nor, frankly, did I expect to see Gandhi giving daily enemas to all the young girls in his ashrams (his daily greeting was, "Have you had a good bowel movement this morning, sisters?"), nor see the girls giving him *his* daily enema. Although Gandhi seems to have written less about home rule for India than he did about enemas, and excrement, and latrine cleaning ("The bathroom is a temple. It should be so clean and inviting that anyone would enjoy eating there"), I confess such scenes might pose problems for a Western director.
