Whose idea was it to send John McCain down to Mexico the day before Independence Day and have him grovel for Latino votes south of the border by visiting the Basilica de Guadalupea famed Catholic shrine featuring the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which most Mexican politicians consider off-limits for campaigning?
According to Frentes Politicos (hat tip - reader Edgar M.), the stunt was the brainchild of none other than McCains open-borders Hispanic outreach director and former Mexican cabinet official Juan Hernandez, who apparently survived the big campaign staff shake-up:
I. El truco para la buena imagen fue idea de Juan Hernández el director de la Oficina Presidencial para Mexicanos en el Exterior de Vicente Fox, quien hoy asesora en asuntos de hispanos al candidato presidencial republicano de EU, John McCain. Dentro del equipo de campaña refieren que el consejero supo referir cuán afortunada en simpatía mexicana resulta una visita a la Basílica de Guadalupe, dada la centenaria cultura popular de equiparar estadunidense con protestante.
Rough translation via Babelfish (if youve got a better one, let me know):
I. The trick for the good image was [the] idea of Juan Hernandez - the Mexican director of the Presidential Office [of Mexicans Living Outside Mexico for] Vicente Fox, who today advises in subjects Hispanic to the Republican presidential candidate of the [Estados Unidos/United States], John McCain. Within the field equipment they refer that the advisor knew to refer how lucky in Mexican affection is a visit to the Basilica from Guadalupe, given the centennial popular culture to compare estadunidense with protestant. Hernandez, of course, served under former Mexican president Vicente Foxwho, what a coinky-dink, also wrapped himself in the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe while campaigning.
Heres McCain with the Virgin of Guadalupe looming over him during a Mexican TV interview:

Could Hernandez and friends be more heavy-handed?
McCains visit last week confounded Mexicans, irked grass-roots American conservatives, and failed to mollify the un-mollify-able shamnesty forces on either side of the border. All for one cheap, pandering photo-op.
If Obama had pulled something this crass and stupid on the eve of Independence Day weekend, Republicans would be having a field day today.
Instead, youll hear nada.
Next pander-stops:
McCain and Obama speak to the League of United Latin American Citizens national convention on Tuesday in Washington and the National Council of La Raza/The Race on Saturday in San Diego.
As I mentioned last week, San Diego votes on a La Raza/The Race Day declaration on Tuesday.
I like Michelle Malkin. She tells it like it is. McCain has done some good things and some bad ones. It doesn’t hurt the conservative movement to be critical about the times he goes against conservative principles. In the long run, I think it helps.
Ben has a vested interest in cheap Mexican labor. He doesn’t want us “bitter vigilantes” running off his slave labor pool.
Were screwed.
Yep. But McCain promises to balance the budget, so I guess that's something.../s/
But McCain has an "R" behind him, so it's okay.
” When was the last time Michelle Malkin generated an original idea that advanced the conservative movement at all?”
About a million times since John McCain did.
My favorite was when Malkin saved the donuts from the muslims.
“Not sure how much harder it is to cross the border, but hopefully no one is making it over the fence.”
What fence? There is no fence, remember. Your gods like John McCain have seen to that. The law means nothing to them.
Somehow that doesn’t surprise me.
Then it should be easy for you to list just one original idea our little spit-wad thrower has come up with.
I hear DU calling you.
If McCain gives the illegal invaders amnesty (and he will) I am going to send him a letter demanding a list of the laws I am allowed to ignore with impunity.
“About a million times since John McCain did.
Then it should be easy for you to list just one original idea our little spit-wad thrower has come up with.”
You first. And Michelle isn’t running for office, so who gives a rip, but deflection is ALL the McCain worshippers have got. Do you agree with McCains immigration policies and votes? Maybe that’s the problem you have with Malkin.
Come on! Juan McCain said that “he’ll build the goddamn fence if they want it”. Isn’t that comforting?(sarc)
On to La Raza, Juan McQuiote!
I could not have said it better!
Gracias.
