All new vehicles on sale in California will soon have to display their green credentials. This is a new scheme implemented by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). From January 1, 2009, stickers like the one seen here will carry information about the environmental performance of every vehicle theyre pasted into.
There will be a Global Warming Score (based on greenhouse gas emissions from driving and fuel production) and a Smog Score (pretty much self-explanatory), both rated on a one-to-ten scale, with ten being the cleanest. And, similar to warnings on cigarette packets, they will say: Protect the environment, choose vehicles with higher scores.
This label will arm consumers with the information they need to choose a vehicle that saves gas, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps fight smog all at once," says Mary Nichols of CARB. "Consumer choice is an especially powerful tool in our fight against climate change.
For most people in California, driving a car is the number-one way they pollute, says Spencer Quong, senior vehicles analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists. Potential customers can already find the relevant facts on the internet (though not necessarily with a ratings system from one single body), but Quong says: These labels are simple and straightforward, and will make identifying a greener car easier than ever.
Californians buy more than 1.5 million new vehicles each year, making up about 10% of the total U.S. new vehicle market.

They are already satirizing themselves. When I hear the radio on and hear the guitar strumming, birds chirping and the folksy guy start talking about how good asbestos (or whatever) is for global warming, I tune it out (their facts are completely wrong) but try to figure out what kind of taxpayer subsidies they are trying to get.
They’ve been doing this in our local paper for some time now. (Austin,TX.)
I’m also very proud of my DIL and older son.
Their Exploder after 8 years of off and on running needed to be traded in.
Our DIL ignored the smog one and got a GMC good size crossover that is safe, burns regular and still gets about 20 mpg.
She wasn’t about to put her children and neighbor’s kids into a littly bitty hybrid. First, not all of their gear and the kids could get into a little hybrid. Last but most important was the safety factor of the bigger vehicle.
True again! And I simply love your new tagline!!!
My next vehicle will be a half ton pick-up. With high fuel prices, in a year or so the price of them will drop even further than they already have.
A compact car would be of little or no use to me with the things I do and where I live.
For all the greenies who like to gripe and moan, I’ve yet to meet one who will miss an opportunity to fly to Europe (or any other enlightened destination) for the sake of reducing their ‘foot print’.
It’s only going to take a couple of feet of sea level rise to take out Sacramento. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of folks. Really.

Why the zero? Erase the 1 and live dangerously.
Yes, I know it’s a one to ten scale... I wonder if there is anything out there they’d actually try to rate as a zero.
