All new vehicles on sale in California will soon have to display their green credentials. This is a new scheme implemented by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). From January 1, 2009, stickers like the one seen here will carry information about the environmental performance of every vehicle theyre pasted into.
There will be a Global Warming Score (based on greenhouse gas emissions from driving and fuel production) and a Smog Score (pretty much self-explanatory), both rated on a one-to-ten scale, with ten being the cleanest. And, similar to warnings on cigarette packets, they will say: Protect the environment, choose vehicles with higher scores.
This label will arm consumers with the information they need to choose a vehicle that saves gas, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps fight smog all at once," says Mary Nichols of CARB. "Consumer choice is an especially powerful tool in our fight against climate change.
For most people in California, driving a car is the number-one way they pollute, says Spencer Quong, senior vehicles analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists. Potential customers can already find the relevant facts on the internet (though not necessarily with a ratings system from one single body), but Quong says: These labels are simple and straightforward, and will make identifying a greener car easier than ever.
Californians buy more than 1.5 million new vehicles each year, making up about 10% of the total U.S. new vehicle market.

I wonder if these concerned scientists are socialists or full-blown communists?
Thanks, Arnie.
How much plastic will be consumed by these stickers? Fossil fuel never to be recovered?
The State of California will owe al gore a lot for the carbon credits.
Let’s see Ford F-350 4X4, should be well below -0.
First, GW is a fabulous marketing campaign. "YOU - and only YOU - can save the planet by polluting less! So buy your hybrids and CFLs today! (this message brought to you by the GE Lighting Divison and Toyota...)"
Second, it doesn't really matter if they're right or wrong, because the average American has a gnat-sized attention span and will forget all of the claims that were made.
And Finally, most of all, if GW turns out to be real...all of the AlGore acolytes will say: "See, I told you so, and you didn't do enough!". And if it turns out to completely fake, the AlGore acolytes can say: "See, I told you so, and it's a good thing that you listened!"
Brilliant. Underhanded, sneaky, completely unethical, but brilliant.
Your point is an excellent one to be made - what will people think 10 years or so from now about the Greed Fad? Guess we'll find out in a while.
Contact your Congress critters to let them know that you are tired of high gas prices.
Greed fad = Green Fad. Interesting Freudian Slip, no?
And the law will be amended the following year to require that anyone owning a low-scoring car to wear a big sign on his back that says ‘KICK ME.’
He's playing on our fears.
The Left demonized the HCUA and McCarthy (who came into the investigations into Communist influence when they were already in progress). They called it a "Red Scare".
This is a Global Warming Scare and it is a tool, an excuse to usher in societal reforms and limits on personal liberty. Our standard of living is "too high". We are the envy of the world.
Barack Obama has already said that we can't just set our thermostats at whatever we'd like, we can't eat certain foods, we can't...
The golden era of America is "over" and we need to accept legislated behavioral "CHANGE".
“Consumer choice is an especially powerful tool in our fight against climate change.
If these idiots think that putting a sticker on a car in California only is going to change the climate then they have lost all common sense.
They are living in a bubble of stupidity where they all support each other like lemmings walking off a cliff.
I wish it were just a fad. Unfortunately, it is turning out to be akin to religious obsession.
This makes me want to:
1) Go out and buy a huge SUV or Truck with the worst score possible.
2) Paste the Global Warming score portion of the window sticker onto the back window, along with the following:
“Hey Greenie: Carbon Footprint THIS!”
Global Warming on Free Republic
Heck with the zero, erase the one. lol.
If I lie on a government form, they threaten to throw me in jail. As actual government employees, the odds and/or severity of punishment should be much greater for them than for me.
Our youngest son got an early inheritance a little over a year ago, my OJ Simpson 1996 White Bronco with Ford’s biggest V8.
Before he “inherited” it, I had one of the best engine tuners put the new expensive plugs, spark wire cables and some other gear in it.
After the above work, CA DMV required a smog test because of its age. The free standing smog testing station said it was one of the cleanest vehicles they had tested for smog.
Our son gets 15-17 mpg with mixed driving. He is on vacation now and got over 23 mpg with the Bronco loaded for two weeks of fun gear on the first tank and still is on the second tank. The Bronco runs on regular gas with no pings nor additives.
He says he may be channging his mind about some little rice burner that will not haul he, his bikes and other gear around.
“The last year for that fantastic in-line 6 - a great engine. I had one of those outstanding vehicles. It was RED with BLACK trim. I give it a 10+.”
We have some friends who have that model/ engine.
The engines may out last the bodies, windshields, seats and other attachments and the owners in a couple of instances.
My sweet wife thought that my two adult sons, our DIL and I were going overboard are the Smug alert and dissing the Precious Smug Hybrid Drivers.
After the past couple months, she may now be worse than we are re calling these +++++++++'s some basic names.
Unfortunately, your beautiful TRUTH has barely gotten in front of a microcosm of brilliant individuals who can actually read and comprehend what you have shared here...
