ACLU Urges Senate to Reject Unconstitutional Surveillance Bill

The ACLU urges Senators to reject legislation that eviscerates the oversight structure of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Last night, the Senate voted to begin consideration of FISA legislation, although the timing of votes on the legislation is not clear.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed an the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (H.R. 6304) that not only allows for the wide, sweeping collection of Americans' communications, but also grants immunity to telecommunications companies for their role in domestic spying. The ACLU vehemently opposes this bill.

"Moving forward on this terrible bill is disappointing to say the least," said Caroline Fredrickson, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. "If the vote on final passage is delayed until after recess, we hope that Senators will return to their districts and see just how strongly their constituents oppose this bill. Perhaps the Fourth of July will remind them of the American values of liberty and freedom."

CAIR Action Alert #540 - Call Your Senators to Oppose Warrantless Wiretapping

(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/23/2008) - CAIR is urging American Muslims and other people of conscience to call their senators today and urge them to vote against legalizing President Bush's warrantless wiretapping program. The U.S. Senate is likely to vote on such legislation this week.

Concerned citizens should also express strong opposition to any legislation that provides immunity for telecommunications companies, some of which may have reportedly violated customer's privacy rights by providing personal information to the government.

The ACLU and CAIR want to leave America vulnerable to another 9/11.Its not a concern for civil liberties that drives their opposition to the FISA reform bill.

They don't show how government surveillance of enemy networks disrupts or harms the rights of law-abiding Americans. I'd believe them except for the fact the Left is the same kind of people that favors the expansion of government into every other aspect of our lives. Why keep that off limits in the name of civil rights when the issue happens to be our national security?

FWIW, one of the former lead counsels for the ACLU is none other than Ruth Buzzi, yes, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, justice of the US Supreme Court. Does she have an agenda? Aw, shucks, no, it’s just a coincidence that she reliably votes against U.S. interests.
