Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday urged Kenyans to marry across tribes as a means of promoting peace and reconciliation in the country.
He was speaking at the wedding ceremony of Bishop Margaret Wanjirus son Steven Kariuki and Anne Chipinde at the Nairobi Pentecostal Church. Mrs Anne Kariuki is Kamba-Rabai while Mr Kariuki is a Kikuyu.
This is how well create a united Kenya and avoid what we saw at the beginning of this year. A country torn along ethnic lines is harmful to itself, said Mr Odinga.
Mr Odinga had expressed similar sentiments on Friday during the 232nd anniversary of Americas independence. We should break the shackles of our own ethnic pre-occupations in charting an inclusive future. We face immense challenges in our country, but none of these will be overcome unless this monster of negative ethnicity is crushed, he had said.
Good relations
His comments came days after Parliament started discussions on the proposed National Ethnic and Race Relations Commission.
The Bill proposes the formation of the National Ethnic and Race Relations Commission that will be expected to facilitate and promote equal opportunities, good relations, harmony and peaceful co-existence among the countrys different communities and races.
The Bill will be scrutinised by the Legal Affairs and Administration of Justice committee that will suggest amendments.
The proposed commission will receive complaints of discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, race or religion, and arbitrate.
Seems like a good idea to me.
It’s a start. Tribalism is the bane of Africa’s existence. All other problems could be solved if only tribalism could be done away with.
At the reception, they sang karaoke.
Or did they sing ‘Kumbaya’?
No one could tell. Too much Kahlua.
I doubt anyone from the Ku Klux Klan was in attendance.
KKK’rs haven’t been seen there in a coon’s age.
Hmmm...wonder if Barack has been having late night chats with his uncle about the bad PR inherent in burning down churches with Christians in ‘em.
A change in his ways? I dunno.
Isn't that Obama's cousin? If so, he isn't a very peaceful guy, himself.

Tomany Mau Maus.

Is that what Hussein called his grandmother?
