Chicago firearms ban may test court ruling

Chicago firearms ban may test court ruling City leaders fear decision may void restriction on guns in the Windy City

CHICAGO — One small reflection of Chicago's bloody year is a sign outside a South Side elementary school that says, "Congratulations Class of 2008. Stop the Violence."

In a city where homicide rates have risen by 13 percent over the same period last year and gunfire killed 26 students in the past school year, Mayor Richard Daley thinks the Supreme Court majority that overturned a Washington, D.C., gun ban last month is detached from urban reality.

"If they think that's the answer, then they're greatly mistaken," Daley protested after hearing that Chicago's 26-year-old gun law is at risk. "Then why don't we do away with the court system and go back to the Old West? You have a gun and I have a gun, and we'll settle in the streets."

Chicago officials say they have reason to be concerned about the high court's decision. The city looks likely to provide the next critical test of the justices' ruling as courts decide how far the decision extends to other cities and the 50 states.

Within hours of the 5-4 decision written by Justice Antonin Scalia, gun rights groups filed fresh challenges to Chicago's restrictions.

Scalia, who spent five years as a law professor at the University of Chicago, close to some of the city's most violent precincts, made clear that some restrictions would be permitted, but the majority opinion left unclear what standards courts should use to assess them.

Well? First intelligent comment this socialist, political hack, has ever uttered.

At least the law abiding citizens would have an even chance against the gangs and other thugs who do not seem to have any problem getting guns (and using them) despite this so called "ban."

Hey Mayor Moonbat: Up here in Vermont (which has the most "sensible" CCW statutes in the country) and whereby many, many (though one does not obviously notice) people carry weapons---yeah, even the dreaded, dangerous, "semi-automatic" handgun--and in my almost 65 years, I've yet to see a real, honest-to-God gunfight on the streets or anywhere for that matter.

And oh by the way, we have one of the lowest per capita murder rates in the country. Coincidence????

“Detached from urban reality”. LMAO. What they’re doing now is working so well, isn’t it?

Daley already has a gun, he has armed body-guards that follow him EVERYWHERE and are parked outside his home on a nightly basis.

Aside from the typical liberal hypocrisy here, for liberals it's always "do as I say, not as I do."

Tell you what Mr. Mayor - you disarm first. (Thank GOD I don't live in C(r)ook county and had the sense to move out to Will County 20 years ago. At least that gun-grabbing SOB can't reach MY guns out here.)

OK, it's a start.

I say we build a 1000 foot wall around Chicago. Install TV cameras then toss over guns and ammo and sell it on PPV.

“Alderman Joe Moore predicted city violence would grow worse if the law is overturned, as numerous scholars expect. “I shudder at the thought of everyone packing heat,” Moore said.”

Oh, sure — meaning the numerous Marxist scholars who believe it’s necessary to disarm the people to protect the government.

I also love/hate the spin “everyone packing heat” to label citizens being able to keep a gun at home for protection from the criminals taking over that city. Hey, Mr. Moore, how about....

“A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government.” — George Washington

He refuses to give up on a failed idea.

In my 31 years employed at SWBT, SBC, and AT&T I negotiated with hundreds of managers that clung to failed programs and policies.....

My understanding of this syndrome was, when they finally realize they are tethered to failure, they refuse to cut the rope for fear of becoming a poster-child for failure... I must admit that this is a fact that they understand.....

When will liberals start trying to take guns from criminals?
Answer - never. They like it when criminals have guns. That gives liberals an excuse to make laws that take guns from law-abiding people.

This has to be a made up statistic. In city trhat controls guns the way Chicago has, this simply can't happen. So, what's the real story, Mayor?

""Then why don't we do away with the court system and go back to the Old West? You have a gun and I have a gun, and we'll settle in the streets." "

What a choad. Let's see, because its part of a system designed by the founders of our country you moron. I wish someone would call these jokers out on the spot when they parrot this garbage.

Does he realize that half of all gun related deaths are from suicide? They don't separate those types of statistics from their treasure of public statements.

What kills our children? Annual deaths / statistics: - 56% Vehicle accidents - 22% Drowning - 15% Pedestrian accidents - 3% Firearms (under 14 years old). More children drown in buckets alone that from firearms - Additionally, 13 children die each day from gun violence: What they don't tell you is this includes gang members ages 18-24 and suicide deaths... the vast majority of these deaths (almost all of them) fall into these two categories.

Registration Laws: - In the history of gun registration in Hawaii, Chicago and DC, gun registration records have failed to solve even a single crime or lead to a single arrest.

Locks and other disabling devices: - When enacting a trigger lock law, California experienced a 12% increase in firearm accidents. States not requiring such locks saw sharp declines in the same years. Not to say the new law caused the accidents, but it does show that law caused no measurable decrease in accidents. Nothing more than political points gained.

- When surveyed, 60% of convicted felons admitted they avoided committing a crime against someone they KNEW had a gun. 40% admitted they avoided the same when they THOUGHT the intended victim MIGHT have a gun.

I still insist that there is movement to disarm citizens of the US overall. These are not attempts to reduce crime at all and the statistics prove it. This movement will not rest until all citizens are disarmed. Faced with hard facts, these folks insist on repeating the same drivel over and over. Make no mistake; this is an attempt to disarm America. Using twisted crime statistics is simply a tool used to justify the agenda that they cannot openly admit.

The "Old West" was much safer than the South Side has been for fifty years.

Da Mayor knows what the real issue is, but cannot state it. And it's not guns.

“Then why don’t we do away with the court system and go back to the Old West?”

In spite of the false depictions of the Old West in the media, the Old West was generally far more law abiding than modern urban centers.

To WhackySam,

Why how dare you report facts!! Don’t you realize that such a monstrous snub of political correctness immediately makes you a racist, bigoted, mean-spirited —go ahead and fill in the next few blanks yourself—truly terrible person. Haven’t the democratic party and the MSM taught you anything? A lower murder rate in Vermont is simply the result of luck, pure luck and nothing else. And that, of course, is the reason the MSM does not report it. And the murder rate in Chicago?? Why clearly the result of Bush administration policies
