Barack Obama now wears his patriotism on his lapel
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 5, 2008 | Peter Nicholas

Tired of having his patriotism questioned, the Democratic candidate has made Old Glory a major visual element of his campaign.

Barack Obama, who once considered flag pins a shallow symbol, can't surround himself with enough patriotic trappings these days.

At the Fourth of July parade here, Obama sat in the reviewing stand with his wife and two young daughters, admiring the simple floats dedicated to rescue workers and local high schools.

He seldom goes out in public now without a flag pin stuck in his lapel. He devoted an entire speech to patriotism this week in Independence, Mo. Visually reinforcing the message, he stood in front of a quartet of large American flags.

None of this is an accident. Polling shows that on the threshold test any serious presidential candidate must pass, Obama has ground to cover.

A CNN poll released one day after the Illinois senator gave his patriotism speech showed that a quarter of registered voters surveyed questioned Obama's love of country. Nearly 30% of the respondents who described themselves as independents -- a coveted slice of the electorate -- believed he lacks patriotism, according to the survey.

So Obama wants to convince voters that he is every bit as patriotic as his Republican opponent.

On this Fourth of July, Obama was not merely talking like a patriot. As he watched the parade -- and as a battery of cameras recorded his reactions -- he clutched in his hand a tiny American flag.

This makes him a patriot just about as much as slipping on a USMC t-shirt makes him a Marine.

Uh huh. Remember that the 'Abraham Lincoln Brigade' sounded real patriotic but the fact was, they were a bunch of Communists who went to Spain to overthrow Franco and put the hammer and sickle over Madrid. Fortunately, they failed.

No, I believe the terminology is "that pin," that pin is now a major visual element of his campaign.

I will not vote for that leftist.

Call me a racist.. please!

He called wearing the pin a cheap substitute for patriotism...and then he wears a pin.

Self-fulfilling prophecy?

That is not HIS hand holding the flag.

As a Harvard-trained lawyer and DNC candidate, doubt
he would directly touch it.

He's got a weird-looking left hand.

Because he was forced to do it. He’s doing so for votes in a most obvious manner. In reality he’s a socialist, a Marxist, and anyone who can’t see through his patriotic ploy is very simple indeed.

All the flag pins in the world can't change this image, O Black Obama.

I wouldn’t care if he had a large flag tattoo’d on his chest. He has already demonstrated his position concerning my Flag and his previous disdain has not really changed, except externally for the press.
I’d vote for Putin before I’d votte for Obama; at least Putin makes no pretense about being a commie.

Obama's Old Gory. . .

"The red stands for the blood of the victims of America, the white is for the rich white people, the blue is for . . . ."

I am not a fan of a fan of black theology of liberation.. even if it was simply to get "street creds" over a period of twenty years.

I used to have free speech but now.. I guess, call me a racist.. please!

(That's right, Obama can't win with or without "that pin" nor should he.)

Character means doing the right thing when no one is looking. Back when (he thought) no one was looking BO displayed no patriotism. Now that the world is looking on, he displays the epitome of patriotism. I make no comment on his patriotism, he's too variable to pin down. On his character, though, its easy to see,he has none.

Barack Obama now wears his patriotism on his lapel

I guess if it exists it's gotta be somewhere. It's certainly not in his heart.

Obama is laughable. In order to “prove” his patriotism, he stopped wearing the flag lapel pin and refused to put his hand over his heart for the Pledge. He’s so above us that he is actually post-patriotic. /sarc

His little flag lapel pin is worn with the flag upside down.
