5-point plan aims to help rid nation of 'oil addiction'

DEERFIELD BEACH - U.S. Rep. Ron Klein announced a "Declaration of Energy Independence" Thursday, a plan he hopes to push through Congress that he says will help the country with what he calls an "addiction to oil."
Klein, D- Boca Raton, thinks the plan, unveiled at a news conference, , could work to lower gas prices in the near future.
The five-point plan consists of:
Imposing criminal penalties for gas price gougers;
Stopping speculation that drives up oil prices;
Demanding oil companies drill all the land they control but are not drilling before leasing new federal land;
Expanding clean energy tax;
Investing in research for affordable energy.
"Let's use American innovation and a sort-of Manhattan Project thinking," Klein said, referring to the 1940s effort that developed the atomic bomb. "Let's find the answers to these problems, and there's a science-based solution to them."
Klein particularly attacked a proposal for oil drilling off the Florida coast, saying the benefits wouldn't be realized for five to 10 years.
The Hill newspaper in Washington reported Wednesday that Klein owned between $1,000 and $15,000 in stock in Hornbeck Offshore Services, which doesn't drill but provides equipment such as tugboats to the drillers.
Klein also called for taking away subsidies from oil companies and possibly putting them toward challenge grants for scientists for alternative energy.

Pardon me Klein, but the EPA has just put a moratorium on solar energy to “study” its environmental effects for the next two years. Let’s see...study two years ...another several years to build, connect, new infrastructure. Uhmm...it is the same time frame that you claim it will take to bring drilling back online in the United States.
Others claim your statement is a myth of timing in epic proportions.
Drill here, Drill now.
Again, why? I'm not arguing with you. I'm trying to disect this as to WHY this is true. We know it's not based on substance so what is the motivation?
As a sideline, we live on a fairly large private lake and the place was packed yesterday. It is against covenant rules to post any political signs but yesterday I noticed a "HOPE" sign placed prominently along the lake. I called lake security and they took it down.
It's just like arrogant Democrats to believe they do not have to abide by the same rules that govern the rest of us.
Oops! You are absolutely correct. I shouldn’t have left that out.
Earlier this year I thought the gop and McCain would win in landslides. But over the last few months they’re acted in such a brain-dead way I can’t see them turning things around in 4 months. The oil issue should be a big winner, a defining issue in the campaign. But McCain and the gop leadership are failing to drive this issue down the throats of the democrats. They need to stand up and say everyday, every time they’re in front of a camera that we have trillions of barrels of oil that we can’t touch because of the liberals. That if we could win a world war in 4 years, we can provide for our energy needs in 4 years. If the liberals would get out of the way.
They may be able to stop American speculators from gaming the price of oil (doubtful) but how will they stop the rest of the world?
“Faerie dust energy” I like it.
I think the left is so filled with self hate they really wants us dead, or living in caves with no heat or light.
“Oops! You are absolutely correct. I shouldnt have left that out.”
With all the things we have to fight liberals on, it is not surprising that we occasionally forget something.
Must have been Klein’s turn to foster the next DNC proposal.
You’ve got that right. I made some comments to a guy on a Human Event Online energy thread who was just brimming with hate and BDS. It was pretty amazing. No ideas for energy solutions, just hate for the political right, America is evil, etc.
