Was rocket moments from striking Continental flight?
Houston Chronicle ^ | July 3, 2008, 12:23AM | CINDY HORSWELL

Probe of launch near Bush airport has stalled...

... ...Continental pilot reported ... object that "went straight up" and left a long white vapor trail.

...A ... recording...shows the radar detected nothing but dozens of airplanes.

... airport ... radar is designed to track the departure and arrival of planes ... It would usually not pick up a small object ... that is going straight up...

... the pilot acknowledged spotting the object. The plane had then reached 4,750 feet elevation and was traveling at 277 mph...

"...what this is on my 12 o'clock ... ? It's climbing about 20 miles up. Is that a rocket launch?" ...

... FAA placed a temporary flight restriction over the area ...

... air traffic controller ... ask[ed] other pilots flying in the area what they saw.

"Negative," said a pilot on Flight 2168.

Flight 1544's pilot ... say again: "It went straight up!"

Later, the dispatcher asks another pilot if he saw a "rocket launch" about "three to four miles out."

... That pilot answers, "See some contrail up here, but that's about it."

... the air traffic dispatcher asks another pilot to radio crew members of Continental 1544 and ask them for a better description ... the object's size and if it resembled a model rocket.

"We're trying to figure out a location to see if this is a problem for us" ...

He tells another pilot who spotted the contrail that "we're keeping you south of that suspected area."

At the speed the plane was flying, the aircraft was only about a minute away from a collision if ...

FBI ... would welcome anyone who might have information about the incident.

This happened to our flight about 5 years ago.... flying on American Airlines from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Baltimore.... as we flew over southeastern Virginia, the plane was right above Dahlgren Naval Surface base.... as we came to find out days later through the media, a rocket/ordnance/whatever was launched at practice, and was at least 200 feet from our flight.... it would’ve killed us all....

Model rockets routinely reach as high as 40,000 feet. The FAA requires prior notification if a model rocket has the potential of entering controlled airspace.

I think it was a bubble in his empty fuel tank.

I doubt they were fireworks. I’ve been to several rocket launches and nothing that small, will go as high as this plane likely was. Usually by the time planes are out very far, they are well over 1000 feet. Now, the image in the next post after yours is more likely....

But, there’s a lot of evidence folks have been checking out airports the past few years. There was a big to-do about some guys in Oklahoma City area around Draper Lake a few years back, who were spotted by a military guy near Tinker.

I’m quite familiar with that area and the Lake as well as the base, and I once told a friend of mine how easy it would be for someone to shoot down a military plane and get away with it from the Lake area.

He agreed. Never thought anything else about it until 9-11 happened, and then sometime later the incident occurred there.

So.. I wouldn’t be too quick to make a rash dismissal of this incident (besides, it didn’t happen in the last few days either, if you bothered to read).

Houston has a rather enthusiastic model rocket community. Wouldn't be at all surprised if this was just some bozo launching a big one from a park somewhere.

It's quite certain that airliners going in and out of Houston Bush aren't that high.

That’s a LOT more impressive than my Estes rocket of my younger days.

A few years back a “Mistral” missile was found in Maryland set up to fire. I don’t think rocket clubs use those, so maybe this about a few practice shots before the real thing.

At LAX the airports take off over the beach and shore. Big 747s, fully loaded with fuel for long trips to Asia or Oceania. Scary how vulnerable they are.

Do SAM’s even go that high?

105,600 feet? Yes, the longer range stuff. But how did an airline pilot determine the altitude, while he was much lower?

And most SAMs will self destruct rather than keep going..........
