[McCain's]Progress with Christian conservative elites (Please read)
The Politico ^ | July 02, 2008 | Jonathan Martin

A good sign for the McCain camp from an absolutely essential constituency. It's not so much that these leaders can move thousands of votes, but to have them off the reservation and teeing up unhelpful quotes for the next four months would have been a huge problem for the GOP.

Reports Michael Scherer:

At a meeting Tuesday in Denver, about 100 conservative Christian leaders from around the country agreed to unite behind the candidacy of John McCain, a politician they have long distrusted, marking the latest in a string of movement that bodes well for McCain's general election prospects among the Republican base.

"Collectively we feel that he will support and advance those moral values that we hold much greater than Obama, who in our view will decimate moral values," said Mat Staver, the chairman of Liberty Counsel, a legal advocacy group, who previously supported Mike Huckabee's candidacy.

"There are people who came through the primary with very mixed emotions of the candidate," Staver continued, noting that many in the group had been in Denver to attend a separate meeting for pastors. "This event was to put those aside."

The group included leaders like Phyllis Schlafly, the longtime leader of Eagle Forum; Steve Strang, the publisher of Charisma magazine; Phil Burress, a prominent Ohio marriage and anti-pornography activist; David Barton, the founder of WallBuilders; and Donald Hodel, a former secretary of the Interior, who previously served on the board of Focus on the Family. Jim Dobson, the head of Focus and an outspoken critic of McCain, did not attend. The McCain campaign was also not directly represented at the meeting.

A second person who attended the event, but asked not to be named, said that the group was motivated principally by a desire to defeat Barack Obama. "None of these people want to meet their maker knowing that they didn't do everything they could to keep Barack Obama from being president," the participant said. "You've got these two people running for president. One of them is going to become president. That's the perspective. That that's the whole discussion."

When the best we can do is McCain and Obama, we may have to take into consideration that the country is already wrecked.

Obama is a nobody, and by this time next year he will be delineated to the “whatever happened to” stage in his life. I certainly want McCain to win, but I am not going to be the one to tell someone that has issues with McCain that it is their fault if Obama gets elected.

Each of us has our own beliefs and we each have to wake up and look at ourselves in the mirror. When we chide and berate, we drive our own farther from us. I will only say that I can understand their view. We already know these people are on the right side, more so than any of us -——— and in the end, they will do the right thing.

The McCain campaign was also not directly represented at the meeting.

Again, McCain disrespects religious conservatives.

The only way this ordained, conservative Christian is supporting McCain is if he picks a viable, pro-life, pro-family conservative VP. Cino Mitt Romney is as liberal as I'll go. I'll not accept the Condi Rices and Colin Powells of the world.

That's the dividing line. Period.

The only way to really do that and have it be heard is if it’s an organized movement that draws attention. My concern is that I want to take a stand for conservatism, but it won’t be heard (which yes, I know if everyone thinks like that, then of course it will never be heard because so few people will do it). In the meantime, while I’m making a futile effort to get something across that won’t be heard, there are two candidates that have the potential to win, and I see that one will do more harm in my opinion. My dilema comes in that I think they will both do harm and voting for the lesser of two evils is just going to further the evil, but on the other hand, by not voting for him it helps further the greater evil if my stand doesn’t even make a ding. It’s a hard choice. If there was a huge movement and it was sure to be heard by more than just the choir, that would make the choice much easier, but there doesn’t appear to be at the moment.

I am with you; McCain was so far down my list...but the prospect of having a liberal youngster like Obama in charge is nauseating.

They are both putting out the same message...vote Obama.

I can tell you the difference.
The trolls say, "Vote Obomba".
The FReepers say, "I will not vote McCain."

You don’t think that the thought of an Obama presidency will send conservatives to the polls in droves? Heck, millions of Hillary’s supporters are campaigning for John McCain just to keep Barry out of the White House:

Are you planning on leaving the country? To be frank, I am still trying to convince myself that I can hold my nose long enough to vote for mccain. I have to agree with Rush - anyone is better than osamabama.

Please don’t confuse Chicago liberals and the multi-generational welfare leeches that keep them in power with the rest of Illinois— most everything outside the city is red state.

Make no mistake, I don't. Consider the fact however, that the entire state is now being run by Chicago Liberals, from Daley through Blagojevich, House Speaker Madigan, Senate Leader Emil Jones, and the largest county budget/patronism/cronyism system in the United States, Todd Stroger.

Make no mistake, Chicago Liberal scumballs are running this state. You know it, and I know it. Doesn't matter that you live in a "Red" county (as do I) it's all about who controls the purse strings of the state.

USC

Exactly. I'm saying the fencesitters, and dems will vote for McCain, but not conservatives. Conservatives know how much of disloyal republican he is...Let the liberal dems have him, he's one of them anyways.

Apparently you are having a hard time grasping the concept I will be voting for a conservative. Obviously not from either of the socialist parties.

Ah yes, the old let's cede a little more of our conservative principles and accept some more socialism to stop socialism strategy. The irony is this type of thinking never demands the socialists sacrifice their socialist beliefs and only empowers them.

It's tantamount to deciding whether you prefer to run or walk off the cliff into the churning sea. I prefer to keep my feet planted firmly on the ground instead of trying to swim in the incoming socialist tide.

Thanks so much!
Help yourself (everyone) to ANYTHING that I post here.
I made that by taking a picture that already had the “alright you rednecks..” on it and I added the “Vote McCain because the alternative is unthinkable”
I think that just about sums it up.
Please take it a spread it around!!!
We need all the help we can get to stop this monster.
