Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.
Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the moneynot the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabees sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.
As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million, says our source.
McCain needs those types of numbers to be competitive with the money-sponge that is the Obama campaign, which has 1.7 million individual donorsas well as the Hollywood machineand is ringing-out advertising dollars across the country, saturating voters in his 50 State Strategy to win the White House.
How the hell did the publisher of the Top 20 Side-Boobs of All Time get this scoop, you must be asking yourself, right now. (We were asking ourselves the same question.) And heres the answer: Its all part of the McCain campaigns plan to directly target college-age voters, in an attempt to sway them away from Sen. Obama, says our source.
Additionally, the campaign wants to solidify their ticket far in advance of the Obama campaign making their VP choice, in order to get a head start on the surge in fund-raising they expect to receive with the announcement of Romney as the Republican VP pick.
So next time two dudes in suits knock on your door, they might want more than to proselytize about the Book of Mormon
UPDATE: We understand better than anyone how crazy it seems that we got this story first, so a healthy level of skepticism is expected. But we stand by the accuracy of our reporting on this, and will give you as many new details as possible in the coming daysincluding the name of our source, if we can.
Yet that contradicts the motivations of others cited by *omney supporters, those calling him "Savior." Do you agree with me that this mindset is blind as well as blasphemous ?
"And we very well may have lost anyway because of the poor choices this nation has made."
Partly, but lack of leadership is the problem, too. *omney had ample opportunity to lead in his state, claim he was the "accomplished" private sector guy. He failed. Spectacularly.
"Maybe Romney is a flim-flam man."
FINALLY !
"I think almost all politicians these days are the same."
Politicians are. Not statesmen. You have to look for the latter. They do exist. Fred was a statesmen. So is Mark Sanford. We fail to elevate those kinds of people and we are doomed to ultimate failure in this country.
"Our nation is in dire trouble. If we elect McCain Romney, it will probably get worse."
Bad or horrible. We've GOT to do better than this, man ! This has been my argument all along.
"And I did not say that Reagan was pro-choice. Reagan was once a democrat, the conservative kind. His ideas matured and he became the best president of the last century. I wish there were another Ronny. What we have left doesnt appear to be even close."
Reagan was a man for his time. We need to find a man for ours. If folks are reduced to accepting flim-flam men as acceptible leaders "to the alternative", we've already lost the war.
Cue the violins, lady. Thankfully I have many FReepers cheering me on that are sick to death of dealing with you hateful, sycophantic troll worshippers of ex-Governor Goodhair.
Actually,he is not going to make it,OH MY GOSH.:)
You’re shocked, huh ? You and Captain Renault. Enough of the red herring crap. Where’s your lil’ frien’ ? I’ll wager he doesn’t exist.
How old is Kennedy? I'm not a rregular court watcher.
I don't see control flipping which ever way things go with the current state of affairs.
I have no, none, nope, zero, zilch, zip, nada hope that McCain will appoint a conservative on par with the conservatives currently seated. I think his appointments will be souter-esque at best and I don't think that Romney would be much different.
They'd rather have a smooth run by the Judiciary with a semi/liberal than have a rough time getting a true conservative through.
Neither of them have any fire in their bellies to take the fight to the libs.
Anthony Kennedy turns 72 this month.
Please stop the personal attacks.
Right on cue w/ the liar bit. You’ve just removed all doubt for me. You’re textbook.
I hate McCain. And I'll wait until Mass Care shakes out to see how much I don't like Mitt.
But you REALLY hate him, don't you?
I can't think of any reason to vote for any of Ron McRombeeani, but I don't have a visceral hatred of them like you do and few others do either.
What's the story? Why do you hate him so much?
Really dj you're in your thirties and it's time to graduate.
I believe this is a lie. The money factor is overrated, and the political suicide McCain would endure by selecting a Massachusetts liberal for the VP slot is underrated. McCain and his people must know this. Romney won't happen. False alarm, nothing to see here.
“Please stop the personal attacks.”
ComeUpHigher to fieldmarshaldj
Rigghhht. Romney wins one of the most conservative states in the nation and you are talking about my liberal hate. When did you stop taking your meds, Fieldy?

Methinks you should take your own advice, troll.
Out of all the important things related to this coming election, this aspect may be the potentially scariest of all. Great points
Where is he ? Who is he ? Prove me wrong.
I have. Please stop the personal attacks.
I wrote a, no, many, posts on the subject. I think I wrote a definitive one back in January, forgive me that I don’t have a link (when I write so much, it’s hard to locate old posts in a timely fashion). It’s not a matter of hating him, it’s a matter of recognizing that he represents everything wrong with our political culture. I’m used to seeing his type on the Democrat side of the aisle: Deceitful, destructive, liberal, say anything to get elected. It’s just that when our party starts elevating his types to high office, we become no better than the opposition. We criticize the rodents for being lemmings, but what does it say about us when we choose to willfully ignore the man’s record and character ? I didn’t sign up for that, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to stay silent about it. Forgive me for not giving you a more comprehensive answer, but my fingers are tired from typing this evening. I didn’t think we’d be back to January again with these *omney threads.
*YAWN*
I’d guess I’d be the hottest thing since sliced bread to you guys if I had *omney Cheesecake on my page ? Sorry, I don’t want to sicken the straights.
Damn, Lancey, where were you earlier this evening when I needed ya ? Off playing cards with the Kid ? ;-)
Lecture your friends, Hoss.
What need do I have to prove anything to the liberal opposition. Wouldn’t be prudent.
