Follow The Money: McCain to Pick Mitt Romney As Running Mate
Co-ed Magazine ^ | July 1, 2008 | Andrew

Posted on 07/01/2008 4:56:30 PM PDT by Plutarch

Sen. John McCain will choose businessman and former Massachusetts Governor, Mitt Romney as Vice President, in his bid for the White House this November, a source closely connected with the McCain campaign, who asked to remain anonymous, told us earlier this afternoon.

Though others were close in the running, the choice ultimately came down to the money–not the man. According to our source, the campaign narrowed their Vice Presidential options to Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, the two most successful opponents of McCain in the bid for the Republican nomination. But despite Huckabee’s sway with far Right conservatives and evangelical voters, Romney packs the deepest fund-raising pockets.

As a successful businessman and prominent member of the staggeringly wealthy Mormon community, Romney brings with him the potential to raise “upwards of $60 million in 30 to 60 days, whereas Huckabee could only raise $10 to $15 million,” says our source.

McCain needs those types of numbers to be competitive with the money-sponge that is the Obama campaign, which has 1.7 million individual donors–as well as the Hollywood machine–and is ringing-out advertising dollars across the country, saturating voters in his ‘50 State Strategy‘ to win the White House.

“How the hell did the publisher of the ‘Top 20 Side-Boobs of All Time‘ get this scoop,” you must be asking yourself, right now. (We were asking ourselves the same question.) And here’s the answer: It’s all part of the McCain campaign’s plan to directly target college-age voters, in an attempt to sway them away from Sen. Obama, says our source.

Additionally, the campaign wants to solidify their ticket far in advance of the Obama campaign making their VP choice, in order to get a “head start” on the surge in fund-raising they expect to receive with the announcement of Romney as the Republican VP pick.

So next time two dudes in suits knock on your door, they might want more than to proselytize about the Book of Mormon…

UPDATE: We understand better than anyone how crazy it seems that we got this story first, so a healthy level of skepticism is expected. But we stand by the accuracy of our reporting on this, and will give you as many new details as possible in the coming days–including the name of our source, if we can.

He’s like Al Gore. I wish I could find that post I wrote months ago on the psyche of the man. Most people do not understand his motivations for running for the Presidency. If they did, they would NOT vote for him.

I will support McCain, however reluctantly, IF he chooses someone like Governor Mark Sanford. If he chooses a liberal like the subject of this thread, I endorse no one (unless a Conservative 3rd party candidate comes along — and that ain’t Bob “I Heart the ACLU” Barr).

Minority or majority view is irrelevent. That I am right is. Just because you lost the argument long ago doesn’t mean you need to continuously engage in vicious personal attacks, honey.

“Thank you. I’m in my 30s”

Well that would explain a lot. You're just a young whipper snapper. I have a client who has been part of the conservative political structure there in Ma. He's in his late 50’s & has been politically connected & active there in Ma. for years. I mentioned your posts to him back when Romney was still in the race. I'll not repeat his response in deference to civility on the board, but to put it very mildly, he said you obviously had very little contact w/ the political workings there in Ma. & that you obviously got most of your info from the liberal press machine.

He worked w/ Romney personally on several issues & considered him an individual of high character & solid conservative values although he did have an issue w/ him on some of the campaign rhetoric on abortion. He was delighted to see Romney change his views on that issue while in office. He also indicated that the libs were extraordinarily well organized & very underhanded in everything they do, far more than we would ever realize (I know this from dealing w/ them in my own state although apparently not to the degree in Ma.).

He stated you were either too young & foolish, or that you might be liberal plant. Given the tenor of your discussions, either may be plausible. You are rarely given to reasoned & civil discussions.

Now, I can either trust someone within the conservative structure there in Ma., or I can get my views form a 30 something that spews nothing but vitriol (a very liberal tactic I might add). As for me, I'll trust the former. No offense man, just telling it like it is.

"He has sexually provocative photographs of underage females posted on his profile."

Wow. Now you're just back to making up falsehoods again. I don't post underage pornography, troll. This website doesn't permit pornographic imagery of any sort and my page has been fully vetted by the mods. If there was anything objectionable on it, I would be asked to remove it immediately. Indeed, I had my page down for a long time and was ASKED by many FReepers to put it up again. Perhaps you're just offended because I don't have pictures of metrosexuals like *omney on my page ?

"This contradicts his claims to be ultra- conservative."

Yet another falsehood. I never claimed to be an "ultra-." I am a Conservative, period. Unlike you.

"He claims Mitt Romney is not conservative enough to be the VP nominee."

He'd have to be a Conservative in the first place, honey.

"I think it is Fieldmarshaldj who lacks conservative credentials."

My credentials and reputation on this website are impeccable. As for yours, posting pictures of drunken college students wearing t-shirts that worship known liberals certainly tells one all they need to know about you.

I was 20 when I was up there for *omney’s first campaign. Back in those days, I truly believed that any Republican was better than any Democrat. Flash forward a few years and I certainly realized there was something far worse... the RINO. I’ve seen that cancer spread well beyond the northeast and has taken over numerous state parties leaving many utterly unable to adequately compete with the Democrat party.

Obviously your friend (who can rationalize such an absolute fraud and con-artist) is clearly a part of the problem and why the MA GOP is in the state it is in now (dead). Let him post here, if he’s man enough. Of course, your friend sounds like the insidious FReeper troll “Reaganesque.”

For those who don’t know fieldmarshaldj, this is the man who, as a result of spending 90 whole days in MA in 1994 helping the Romney Senate campaign, proclaims himself an expert on all things Romney. He knows his heart, his mind and everything there is to know about Mitt Romney. Ninety days and never once met the man except in passing. An expert: if you define the word as meaning self-aggrandizing fool with delusions of adequacy.

Also, it might interest the readers here that Mr. Robinson’s post was in response to my own. I told him quite directly that I disagreed with him on Mitt Romney and I have done so in the past as well. So, no one should feel intimidated by this attempt to claim that if you disagree with the owner of the site, you will be banned. It wouldn’t be much of a FREE Republic if that were the case, now would it? And if it were the case, would you want to have anything to do with a Conservative site so insecure in its own Conservativism that it has to ban rival, Conservative opinions? Think about it.

Wow! The liberal parallels just continue.......

Have you folks out there ever noticed how angry liberals get. The argument is rarely about substance, just attack mode w/ all the vitriol one can muster. My buddy was dead on as to how FMDJ would react. Sad really.

Well, given your own pig-ignorant blindess and ra-ra liberal propaganda for the RINO version of the false Messiah...
Whatever you are smoking is making you delusional. I have been anythign but "ra ra" or blind. Blindness is where you seem to be - blind with hatred.

"Don’t preach to me about intellectual integrity and knock it off with the personal attacks. They are unbecoming."

Find a mirror and repeat that to yourself, babe.

Try to be a little coherent, why don't you?

Newt would lose. He got the GOP to the promised land, but he went back and wandered about in the desert again.
Perhaps. Perhaps not. After all, we have McCain at the helm. At least Newt is articulate and has great ideas. Given a fair fight, he'd out-talk and out-govern Obambi a million times over.

"If any strong conservative had an ounce of a chance, I would be out there campaigning for him or her, but they aren’t out there."

We had Fred. Where were you ?

Supporting Fred while he was in the race. He dropped out.

"I used my vote for Huckabee in the primaries."

The Southern *omney. Well, that's reassuring.

I'm from Ohio. At that point, the only people still in the race were Huck and McCain. While the issue was still undecided, I sure as heck wasn't going to vote McCain.

"I don’t want McCain, but he’s the belle that has been brought to the ball."

I didn't bring him, and if he insists on slitting out party's throat by having a liberal fraud as his running mate, he can take himself home (or to the boneyard).

If he chooses a liberal, I agree. But don't you believe people can grow? Don't you believe they can change their minds? Or at least, realize that it is politically stupid to be a liberal Republican on a national scale? In Massachusetts, Romney ran and governed to the left because the state is left leaning. I don't believe he will be the conservative we would like. But I do think he is shrewd enough as a politician to move more to the center right than he was as governor. I'm choosing to accept his lip-service because right now our choices are very slim. I am hoping that he has indeed grown up a bit. Reagan did it. Bush I even became more pro-life. It is possible.
"I’ve studied Romney."

Au contraire. If you knew him and his record and claimed to be Conservative, you couldn't. Of course, you just said you were supporting Huckster...

Sorry, fieldmarshaldj, you have no grounds to say what I have and have not studied, and you don't get to define conservatism as "supports only the people I like". Huck is a great speaker. Personable. Pro-life and pro-Israel (two very important issues). Perfect? No. But, the longer this nation continues the less perfection we are getting in Washington precisely because corruption is corrupting on a larger scale each day and the good guys blemishes are being used to destroy them. That's bull. I haven't lived a perfect life. These guys aren't perfect either. We work with what we have though, if at all possible.

"I like him better than McCain because I think McCain can be a rather nasty individual to conservatives."

We already know that. But why would you remedy that by supporting someone who has a record of euthanizing the GOP ? At least there is still a Republican party in Arizona.

Last time I looked, Massachusetts was nowhere near being a healthy GOP hotspot. Further, I don't see that Romney killed what was there.

"Do I think Mitt is perfect. No."

I've heard this same line trying to concede the man's faults. Problem is, that's like a man who has been rolled into the hospital after being run over by a car and saying, "He's just got a hangnail."

No, it is like an American conservative looking at her choices for President and trying to find ANYTHING positive about any of them. Frankly, we are in a pathetic mess but it would be far better to have McCain/Romney than Obama.

"I do think he has good business sense from when I have heard him speak concerning business."

And yet his record as Governor demonstrates he did NOTHING to prove any business credentials. The state continues to decline.

Who is in the state legislature in Mass? It's like the President, could Bush REALLY fix the economy? You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear if the sow is really a wild rabid boar. The Massachusetts Legislature is one of the worst in the nation. Romney isn't Jesus. He can't heal an institution that is so far gone as to vote the way it votes in most cases.

"Is he pro-life? Says he is."

He'll SAY whatever he thinks a crowd wants to hear. I was there for his first campaign for Senator. He's a slick talker. Why do you think I call him "Joe Isuzu" ? To the weak-minded, this guy could sell Eskimo suits (with moth-holes) to folks living in the Sahara.

Perhaps, but I would rather vote holding out hope that a guy means what he says than allow a person to win who is blatant about his baby killing.

"People change their minds, you know."

Yeah, and right just in time to run for President. Don't you guys know when you're being lied to ? You CANNOT be that stupid and naive.

Fieldmarshaldj, stop with the insults. Of course, we realize that this is a possibility. You do not understand the gravity of the situation that this nation is in right now. We are being very realistic and don't like this choice at all; but, barring McCain choosing someone who comes out as a far left liberal, we have to support the party's candidate against Obama.

"He’s not as pro-life as I would like him to be, but neither is McCain. Is he pro-military? Yes."

This from a man whose family hasn't had a single member to serve in the military for generations. I don't trust him on that, either.

I had great uncles who served. My grandpa wanted to serve but couldn't because of his eyesight. Others in my family did not join the military but love their country and support the military. One doesn't have to be in a military family in order to be patriotic. Thus far, I see no grounds for your distrusting him in this area.

"And, he’s better on immigration than McCain."

He'd sign off on shamnesty faster than McCain would. You'd be a fool to trust him on anything.

Baloney.

"They are both pro-Israel and anti-islamofascism and are far more likely to nominate a Scalia than an Obama candidacy."

This is why I know you haven't researched *omney at all. If you did, you'd know his record of appointing a liberal, pro-criminal judiciary. And don't tell me he "changed his mind." Enough is enough. This guy sets off more alarm bells than a jihadist going through an airport security screen.

You can't have it your way, FMDJ. I HAVE studied Romney. My study just contradicts your opinion and you're being a obstinate bore in asserting otherwise. I know what I have studied. You don't. Your protests don't change a thing, but do make your arguments sound more hollow.

"IF Obama wins, Mr Robinson, myself, and you will likely not have the freedoms to post on a forum like this at long. You will then fully understand what Stalinism is at its worst, and Romney will appear to be Reaganesque in comparison."

Of course, McCain could smarten up and pick Mark Sanford, a proven effective leader and giant who attracts Conservatives like flies to honey (oh, and for the FReeper women and metrosexuals who value looks above record, he would be attractive to them) and we wouldn't have to worry so much about November.

No name recognition, and in case you haven't noticed, McCain isn't exactly a live-wire on the attraction scale. I hardly know he is running. I like Portman, but again, no name recognition. Romney isn't as good of a speaker as Huck. Huck isn't as smart in business as Romney. And, again, given that these are our choices, the whole election stinks.
