Parliamentary complaint over birthday party (Sweden- 8year-old boy didn't invite 2 classmates)

A heated debate is raging in Sweden after an eight-year-old boy's failure to invite two classmates to his birthday party resulted in a complaint filed with parliament.

Nearly 200 outraged comments have been posted on the website of the local southern Swedish daily Sydsvenskan, just days after the paper reported on the unlikely string of events that followed a young boy's decision to invite all of his classmates to his birthday party except two.

The policy at the boy's school in the southern town of Lund was that all children (or all the boys or all the girls) had to be invited to parties when their invitations were handed out in class.

AdvertisementWhen a teacher noticed that two children had been left out of a party list, she promptly confiscated all the invitations, according to Sydsvenskan.

The school principal said that the ones who were not invited felt sad and left out.

The boy's father meanwhile decided to file a complaint with the Swedish parliamentary ombudsman, insisting his son's rights had been trampled on.

He told the paper that the two boys in question should not have been surprised that they had not made the guest list.

He claimed that one of them did not invite his son to his birthday and the other has bullied his son for six months.

He said: 'You don't invite your antagonists to a birthday party,' adding that he had not been aware of the school policy.

He said that his son feels terrible about the situation as no one has the right to confiscate anyone's property in this way.

He added that it is just like stealing mail.

The parliamentary ombudsman is scheduled to rule in the case on 8 September.

A sad situation -- but if you live in a socialist country, you have to get used to the authorities confiscating your property.

Gov’t is just getting started. After telling them who they must invite, they’ll monitor the party to make sure no unhealthy snacks or drinks are being served. All party games will also have to be approved by the Minister of Recreation.

Happy Birthday kid.

My daughter's kindergarten class has the same rule. Invite all children if the invites are to be handed out in class.

If you want to leave some kids uninvited, then mail them out yourself. I don't have a problem with this as it is meant to save the uninvited kids embarassment. I don't think a federal case should have been made out of this rule, though.

The teacher should have said nothing to the children but should have telephoned the boys parents to ask if they might reconsider. If they refused, the teacher should have left it at that. For the state to become involved in something like this is beyond hare-brained.

Invite all children if the invites are to be handed out in class.

Same policy here. I understand it and never had a problem with it. We tell our kids to hand out invites discretely on the bus, at recess, or on lunch. Obviously the kiddies need to get over it if they don't get invited, but it's drama in the classroom that their teachers shouldn't need to deal with.

Funny story happened with my kindergartner....Mom and my youngest went to the bowling alley to pick up the older sister one day. My youngest sees a big group of her friends bowling. "HOORAY!" she cheers as she greets her friends with hugs and admires all of the balloons. It was only after leaving that it began to sink in...."wait a minute", she must have thought.

Hash bars of Amsterdam may run out of puff in face of smoking ban

The marijuana bars of Amsterdam have survived many legal challenges but may finally have met their match in health and safety laws.

From Tuesday, the Netherlands becomes the latest European country to comply with EU law and ban smoking in bars and restaurants.
The Health Ministry has made it clear the ban will apply to cafes that sell marijuana, known as coffee shops.
But many hope to exploit a loophole: the ban covers tobacco but not marijuana.
That still leaves coffee shops and customers with a problem. Marijuana users traditionally smoke pot mixed with tobacco.
One alternative is “vapouriser” machines, which incinerate the drug smokelessly. Another scheme is replacing tobacco with herbs like coltsfoot, which smokers describe as tasting a bit like oregano.

Yet, this is what happens when the state takes over families and children.

Yes I’m sure it’s a very good use of tax dollars, school resources, etc, to supervise the handing out of a party invitation. This is very important, as opposed to learning and other extraneous activities, and it teaches the kids early on that the state controls their every move and will “protect” them even from having their feelings hurt. This makes the children much happier right up to the moment when reality intrudes and exacts its inevitable toll.

You try to explain to people that yes, each of these one million policies sounds like a “good” thing but when you take a look at the whole picture enormous time and money is wasted by having government do all this non essential crap. Plus the intrusion on our lives.

Nice to know their government doesn’t have anything else to worry about.

One of the often-overlooked episodes in the history of colonial America is the founding of New Sweden. The history books never explain the real reason the Swedish colonists wanted to get away from Sweden.

I just left an email list because of some people on it who think big government is the answer to everything. They were complaining about the government, then turning around and saying that the answer to problems is to raise taxes to pay for more government programs to help people, and rich should pay more because they have it to contribute. Gack.

Just trying to explain why this is wrong to people who just don’t get it is the ultimate in futility.
