In defiance of traditional party labels, Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, may ask the defence secretary of President George W Bush to stay on if he wins the White House.
Obamas top foreign policy and national security advisers are pressing the case for keeping Robert Gates at the Pentagon after he won widespread praise for his performance. The move would be in keeping with Obamas desire to appoint a cabinet of all the talents.
After appealing for unity with former rival Hillary Clinton and her supporters and big donors last week, Obama, 46, is turning his attention to wooing Republicans and independent voters who may be concerned that he lacks the experience to be trusted with Americas defence.
Richard Danzig, an adviser to Obama on national security and a former navy secretary, said: My personal position is Gates is a very good secretary of defence and would be an even better one in an Obama administration.

Bob Barr is against the US capturing known terrorist cell phone conversations between terrorist foreign nationals and terrorist foreign nationals. Are you?
If the IslamOfascists take over there will be no government
Yup... Obama's judges would have rendered the same verdict on the 2nd Amendment as Alito, Scalia and the Republican appointments just did.
You just go ahead and vote for the Dems by NOT voting for McCain (NO, I do NOT like the him that much) . We LOSE ANYTHING in the Constitution by teaching another lesson... Mark my words.... We WILL NOT get them back.
You doggone well better think about that.
It’s not surprising, it’s hard to find any democrats these days who would be any good at the job.
Clinton tried a Democrat, and he screwed up so bad Clinton had to replace him with a Republican. Not much of one though.
More likely Obama will choose Barney Frank to be in his cabinet.
Thank you patriot08.
He certainly needs someone who has a clue.
AFAIK, he doesn't. But he does support not preparing for wars with more sophisticated enemies, like the ChiComs or the Russians. He's said as much himself, when he cashiered the Chief of Staff of the Air Force and the Secretary of the Air Force.
McCain is unlikely to appoint such strict constructionist judges either. He wouldn't appoint a Ginzberg, but he might very well appoint a Stevens (Ford), Souter (Bush I), or even a Kennedy (Reagan) who while he voted for the Constitution in Heller, voted for Child Rapists, using a wacko standard for "cruel and unusual", and full Constitutional rights for terrorists.
Possibly..tho he did promise to do so a couple of weeks back.
OTH, we could teach 'em another lesson and count on Barack to appoint the judges we like...
Right now, the balance is about right. The most consistently libertarian judge on the court, Kennedy, provides the crucial vote in favor of second amendment rights with the conservatives while he also provides the crucial vote with the liberal justices for civil liberties.
Also, the conservative judges are young and probably will be on the court in four years. The most liberal judges on elderly so any replacements will be pretty much a wash. If there was ever a time to vote your conscience for a third party candidate, this is it.
You cannot be a conservative and Constitutionalist and really believe this... 5 to 4 on the Second Amendment...
How could you possibly believe the 4 were a good balance?
This is right vs wrong....
And Michael Moore will be Obama’s press secretary.
But...but...I thought we needed change!
McCain could use this in an ad: “The nation is so safe that Obama is willing to keep the same Sec. of Defense Bush picked”.
WJC brought on Cohen in the second admin. Gates would be staying on.
HUGE historic difference.
“Bush’s third term”?
Because the liberal four are sometimes superior to the conservative four on fourth, fifth amedment and privacy issues. The best guy on the court by far is Kennedy who is more likely than any other member to support both privacy and the second amendment.
A Justice Kennedy is better than a Justice Ginsburg. So if we replace Stevens and Ginsburg with two Kennedys, we would actually be drifting the coiurt to the right because two cultural marxists wil be replaced by two moderates.
Interesting... Thanks for your thoughts.
