Fake Speed Bumps Create Optical Illusion, Driver Confusion
Fox News ^

PHILADELPHIA — Cathy Campbell did a double-take and tapped the brakes when she spotted what appeared to be a pointy-edged box lying in the road just ahead. She got fooled. It was a fake speed bump, a flat piece of blue, white and orange plastic that is designed to look like a 3-D pyramid from afar when applied to the pavement. The optical illusion is one of the latest innovations being tested around the country to discourage speeding. "It cautions you to slow down because you don't know what you are facing," Campbell said. ...

Does this strike anybody else as one of the worst ideas of all time? You just know somebody is going to get rear-ended because of this.

Speaking of rear enders, studies have shown that there are more rear end accidents at intersections with red light cameras. People who might normally go through the yellow light slam on the brakes so as not to get caught going through the intersection as the light changes. So they get rear ended instead.

That's no speed bump. That's a barricade!

at intersections with red light cameras.

Don't worry. We will all adjust to them just like animals adjust to tracking implants in their ears.

Musent forget the real reason we have tracking cameras - so they will know where we are at, at all times ya know.

People who come up with ideas like this don't think beyond the immediate results. People see he ‘object’ and slow down. That's as far as the idea person sees ahead. They miss the next step, people who slow down for no apparent reason often get hit from behind. It's a liberal trait. It's the thought that counts.

I recall way back in 1972 when the local hospital decided they needed speed bumps to slow down cars approaching a pedestrian crosswalk. Makes sense, who wants pedestrians in the crosswalk getting whacked by cars? The problem was that every ambulance going to the emergency room had to navigate those speed bumps. Very uncomfortable for people who are in pain and downright dangerous for the patient with an unstable spinal injury.

After millions are spent installing them, and there are hundreds of accidents, and millions in damages, people will become familiar with them — and then they’ll be completely ignored.

I remember having a fracture femur and even the smallest dip or jerk of the ambulance caused tremendous pain. OTOH I know how stupid people can be, I was driving on a county road last year as 2 deer came up out of a culvert, I slam on the brakes and I nearly caused three cars behind me to wreck. There was maybe enough room for one car to follow at that distance but someone 3 squeezed in.

Right you are those look very large. Some drivers may even be scared of damaging their car. I wonder how long it will be before someone swerves to avoid them and causes a serious accident.

Hey, the same technique has fooled cattle for decades, so why not humans? After all, liberals are as dumb as cows, so it'll work for half the population.

Why not put up walls across the streets and have Wile E. Coyote paint tunnels on them? That would really slow down traffic.

I think the whole speed bump thing is a scam. My brother lives near a park that I have to drive by on the way to his home. Then I have to traverse the course again on the way home. There are about seven speed bumps every 75 to 125 feet along that park frontage. By the time I have traversed that stretch of road, I want to strangle someone.

Evidently some kid ran out in the street and got killed af few years back. Now every driver that traveles that road 24 hours a day has to practically stop at every speed bump. They are about four inches high. The parents aren’t to blame, no penalty for them. Evidently the public that has to travel that stretch of road is to blame, and they are penalized every time they need to use the public road.

You’d have to be a complete moron to think this is justified.
