Barack Obama on Thursday used Pittsburgh as his stage to ask Americans for a mandate to implement a national health care plan if he's elected president.
"If we can't control skyrocketing health care costs, we'll confront a mounting moral crisis and a major anchor on the ability of American business to compete,"
Obama said the health care system's shortfalls hold back the nation and concern Americans more than any issue except soaring fuel prices.
"The key is that the American people have to provide a mandate for change in this area," Obama said. "We have to insist ... we're going to hold the president accountable. We're going to hold Congress accountable."
When the Clinton administration tried to get Congress to adopt a national health care plan in 1993, much of the business community and many Americans opposed the idea, but "a political realignment has taken place," he said.
"I'm expecting U.S. Steel and General Motors and other key industries to say we've got to get this done for our sake as well -- that this is No. 1 of our priority list, not something that's on a back burner," Obama said.
Obama's proposal would keep the private insurance system, but expand it by subsidizing premiums for people who can't afford insurance, based on a sliding scale depending on personal income. Government, businesses and consumers would share costs. A proposed National Health Insurance Exchange would monitor participating insurance companies.

Just remember: once it’s here, it’s here for all eternity.
Some folks say that the old National Socialists just couldn't have been leftists, because the industrialists supported them, and a lot of the rhetoric seemed to be about boosting business.
Well, here we have the most far-left member of our Senate, promoting the nationalization of the enormous health care industry and pledging to do so because it will help American business compete.
Fascism.
Obviously he doesn’t consider Canada and England industrialized nations. Cost would be shared by the govt, business and consumers? Unless I missed something, the only money the govt has is yours and mine - so that means we would be paying two-thirds. What businesses? Unless you have Green something in your name, you’re not going to be in business and the Greenies won’t cover people who smoke, drink, eat meat, drive to work instead of walk, are having a baby or planning to have a baby, are even one pound overweight, etc.
The median life expectancy in the US is lower than some primarily because of poor life-style choices involving the young. (Motor vehicle accidents, drugs, gang warfare, unprotected anal sex.)
That sounds fair. Let's split the cost three ways -- "government" money, "business" money and "consumer" money". Now where does "government" and "business" get their money in the first place?
This is what national health care is about - controlling behavior. Yes, they are fascists.
BUT, everyone else from consumer to healthcare providers will HATE socialized medicine.
and medicare just cut my reimbursement by 16% this year. Dont be surprised when our care does become mediocre - the reimbursement is becoming not worth the long hours and amount of risk.
Next time you see more foreign medical grads flooding our healthcare system, you will know why
National health care could onlyh hasten the demise.
Think of how many government employees will be required to keep track of waiting lists with 100 million people on them.
During epidemic conditions, people won’t receive treatment because of unlimited demand and reduced supply of servicers.
Same thing under socialist health - unlimited demand (because it’s “free”) and reduced amount of doctors (due to price fixing).
Think of how gov’t employees can put themselves at the front of those lists, or those who properly grease them.

Hussein Obama, his racist wife, and Soros the puppeteer want America to be a dictatorship run by them and their Liberal thugs. Health care, food, the air you breathe, everything handled out to the American people by them according to their rules and dictates. Their priority in conjunction with the MSM is to destroy and take away the Second Amendment and then it’s life and death by their rules. The sheeple are going to wake up and find that they are no longer free and America, as we knew it, gone. Your children and grandchildren will be slaves to Liberals. Yes, it’s that bad, IMO.
How can he imagine it costing less when everything the government touches spirals out of control?
Healthcare - Democrat solution = RATION
Energy - Democrat solution = RATION
Income Disparity - Democrat solution = RATION
Fascist solution to everything - reduction of YOUR lifestyle, while WE continue ours.
It’s about increasing the difference in lifestyle between the elite and the commoner.
I once flew home from the Bahamas with three broken ribs and a punctured lung to receive health care in an American hospital rather than go to the local outfit.
I hurt like the dickens, but I was taken care of as soon as entered the ER. Got a room in no time afterwards, and was released four days later under my own steam - so to speak.
If our health care is so rotten in America, why do people from all over the world come to America to get treatment for life threatening or chronic illnesses?
National health care is destined for failure.
Drug companies have mostly ceased to exist in countries with "free" health care. Price-fixing by the government doesn't allow for R & D expenditures. That's why almost all new drugs come from the US.
It's similar to what happened in the US with the creation of the ICC. The Feds ran the railroads into bankruptcy, then nationalized them as the only way to keep them running. Similar to what Greyout Davis did in California with the power comapnies.
He would up the Capital Gains tax, even if it caused revenues to decline.
He would up the Capital Gains tax, even if it caused the economy to slow down.
Why?
Because upping the Capital Gains tax just seems more fair.
So, you think he might be concerned that increased government control will increase the cost of health care? I'm pretty sure Obama isn't losing any sleep over that possibility.
