North Pole could be ice-free this summer, scientists say

(CNN) -- The North Pole may be briefly ice-free by September as global warming melts away Arctic sea ice, according to scientists from the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.

It's a 50-50 bet that the thin Arctic sea ice, which was frozen last autumn, will completely melt away at the geographic North Pole, Serreze said.

Serreze said it's "just another indicator of the disappearing Arctic sea ice cover" but that it is happening so soon is "just astounding to me."

"Five years ago, to think that we'd even be talking about the possibility of the North Pole melting out in the summer, I would have never thought it," he said.

"If you talked to me or other scientists just a few years ago, we were saying that we might lose all or most of the summer sea ice cover by anywhere from 2050 to 2100," Serreze said. "Then, recently, we kind of revised those estimates, maybe as early as 2030. Now, there's people out there saying it might be even before that. So, things are happening pretty quick up there."

but I am growing skeptic of EVERYTHING these days

Good, that probably shows you're becoming a good conservative. Temperatures on Earth change. Have for a long time, will continue to for a long time.

Of course it’s had cycles, and most are livable. But the entire polar ice caps melting (and not just a little) couldn’t be a good thing for humans. As I said in another post, the Earth doesn’t care, but as a human, I do. I understand the nature of it, I understand it’s a part of this world. But the dinosaurs experienced it too and that didn’t go so well for them. I’ve heard of the ice caps melting and refreezing, that seems typical. But melting completely? Which I realize happened yet, but I also don’t know when volcanoes have erupted under them.

Do we have a record that volcanoes have erupted under them in our civilized lifetimes? I don’t know that. Do you? And please know I am not being sarcastic in asking that. I truly just want information and this place seems to know more than most other Gore loving places.

Here's the long-term graph from your link, the current level is shown as an upward spike on the downward trend:

Volcanoes erupt in spurts not constantly, which means their historic role is simply unknown; the significance is that the role they play has not been taken into account in all the climate models because of our ignorance.

To not make some allowance for including them in future analysis after discovery could lead to more doubt about the level of robustness in current ice-melt theory.

This should be treated as another tool in our kitbag.

That list of crossings of the NW passage needs one more:

In 1985 the icebreaker CGC Polar Sea (WGB 11) left from Seattle, travelled down the west coast, transited the Panama Canal, went up the east coast, then crossed above Canada breaking ice much of the way through the NW passage, then back around and down through the Bering Sea, then back to Seattle. It was a solo circumnavigation of North America.

Same Story over on the DU and look at the kind of idiotic replies they have. LOL

From the DU.
-”Wouldn’t it help if the damn ships, boats, airplanes, stayed away from the ice caps.”

- “This is one case where I DO believe in the death penalty.”

-”There is nothing to say that will make a difference. We have chosen our course”

- “approaching tipping point - when the methane in the polar ice goes, we enter full-fledged worldwide crisis.”

- “The planet is dying and the criminals are winning.”

- “Do you drive a car? Do you use oil? This is a collective problem. We are ALL guilty. Nobody put a gun to your head and forced you to contribute to global warming.”

Looks like the Realclimate site is actually hoping all the ice melts for “symbolic” purposes;

“Gavin:

I hope that I will not be pilloried by the community for being a part of this story. From what I can gather, it started with a piece in “National Geographic Online”, moved to a piece in “The Independent”, another piece on CNN, and then quickly grew out of all reasonable proportion. A positive feedback process. I’ll be the first to agree that losing the ice at the north pole this summer would be purely symbolic, but symbolism can be pretty darned powerful.

[Response: As we are seeing! We should perhaps tap into it more often.”

Great info on this thread and a couple others. I’m hoping to compile as much as I can find and send it to every moonbat in Olympia that’s trying to profit from gorebull warnings - again!
