"To be clear: Barack will support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies." Obama spokesman Bill Burton, Oct. 24, 2007
That was then: Democratic primaries to be won, netroot lefties to be seduced. With all that (and Hillary Clinton) out of the way, Obama now says he'll vote in favor of the new FISA bill that gives the telecom companies blanket immunity for post-9/11 eavesdropping.
Back then, in the yesteryear of primary season, he thoroughly trashed the North American Free Trade Agreement, pledging to force a renegotiation, take "the hammer" to Canada and Mexico, and threaten unilateral abrogation.
Today, the hammer is holstered. Obama calls his previous NAFTA rhetoric "overheated" and essentially endorses what one of his senior economic advisers privately told the Canadians: The anti-trade stuff was nothing more than populist posturing.
Nor is there much left of his primary season pledge to meet "without preconditions" with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There will be "preparations," you see, which are being spun by his aides into the functional equivalent of preconditions.
Obama's long march to the center has begun.
And why not? What's the downside? He won't lose the left, or even mainstream Democrats. They won't stay home on Nov. 4. The anti-Bush, anti-Republican sentiment is simply too strong. Election Day is their day of revenge for the Florida recount, for Swift-boating, for all the injuries, real and imagined, dealt out by Republicans over the last eight years.

Americans are not going to vote for Barack Hussein Obama, the terrorist appeasing racist. Obama is not going to win. You sound like a sore loser because your choice that you believed would win, the Surrender Monkey Ron Paul was nothing more than a blip on the screen.
I agree with your prediction. He will flip on drilling.
My prediction to my moon-bat father really pixxed him off. Obama, if elected, will use an unelected “commission” for cover to stay in Iraq. He’s not dumb enough to surrender while winning.
Now I have an interesting anecdote.
A liberal CPA friend was at some Washington DC meeting that had the top economic/tax advisors for McCain and Obama talking/debating about their tax policy. Obama’s rep (I think it was a she, but I will use he) was a total joke. He could not answer any question directly. All of the answers were “Obama has been too engaged in the campaign for the past year to think about specific tax policy”.
The liberal came way with the feeling that the Obama people were never going to commit to any position OR that they actually had no position. Either way, she was annoyed, dismayed and p-ssed to be lied to.
Obama will now do his imitation of Bill Clinton.
The Doubletalk Express to the White House.
I saw Krauthammer on Brit Hume today. Obama plays both sides of the SCOTUS ruling too. He was for the Ban in DC but he approves the SCOTUS ruling!!
We agree..nice post.
NoBombo is that floppin fish out of the water. His handlers sure are idiots."
No, this is a RIGHT-WING CONSERVATIVE country with a few fringes telling us it isn’t. Untill the GOP realizes that, we will keep getting suck ass candidates like John McLame.
“There are probably an exactly equal number of people on FR who fall into the categories of hold my nose and vote for the sellout as there are on DU. One can loath McCain and yet see what a difference ONE supreme court justice makes”
With the Senate in Dim hands, the judges argument holds no water.
There's only so far the Messiah can go before he loses the "idealistic" left-wing base and the oft-predicted "youth vote". It's one thing to flip-flop on public financing or gun control, but off-shore drilling is a fault line neither he, nor the left-wing Democrats dare straddle, if they don't want the environmentalists abandoning ship for Nader. It would be really hard to persuade Ralphie boy not to mount a serious effort if Obama moves to McCain's side on drilling.
I’m not against pols changing positions when the facts change. What makes a pol a hypocrite (and there are more than a few on the Republican side too) is changing positions just to get votes. Obviously McCain’s flip-flop on offshore drilling was such a move. But it was the correct one. However McCain is closely scrutinized and criticized by the right-wingers who want to put his feet to the fire. The lefties however will take whatever humiliation Obama stuffs down their throats and utter nary a peep.
True--Chief Justice Roberts didn't get any democrat votes...uh, wait a minute...
The choice couldn't be simpler. I'm not saying it's a perfect choice, but it is THE choice. Who do you want to pick SCOTUS judges--Obama or McCain?
I love the attitude of "The Democrats have a majority, so we might as well just give up"--yep, THAT attitude will win voters to the Republicans!
The attacks on our country by Al-Qaeda including 9/11 were given ample boost by the neglectful policies of the Clinton admin. Obama would be much worse than even the Clintons. The risk of another successful attack would go up precipitously. That's why I'm going to hold my nose and vote for McCain.
Exactly. The cartoon is spot on.
"There's nothing holding me in place, I'm flippin', I'm floppin'...". ...
“I saw Krauthammer on Brit Hume today.”
The best thing about yesterday’s show was the fact that Mort wasn’t on. He really doesn’t have a clue.
