Virginia's 100th execution in modern times was carried out last night as Robert Stacy Yarbrough died by injection for the 1997 slaying of a country store owner.
Yarbrough, 30, was pronounced dead at the Greensville Correctional Center at 9:28 p.m.
Asked if he had any last words, he said, "Tell my kids I love them. Let's get it over with. Make people happy," according to a prison spokesman.
He was sentenced to die for the May 8, 1997, capital murder of Cyril H. Hamby, 77. Hamby was tied up and nearly decapitated with a knife during a robbery of the small Mecklenburg County business he operated for more than 50 years.
Yarbrough appeared calm and looked down toward the gurney as he was led into the execution chamber. He seemed to drift into sleep as the first of three chemicals were administered.
The execution took longer than normal. The curtain was closed at 9 p.m., blocking the view of witnesses, as the IV lines were inserted into his arms, a procedure that is usually performed in just a few minutes. Virginia Department of Corrections spokesman Larry Traylor said there was difficulty placing one of the IV lines.
The curtain reopened at 9:17 p.m. and Yarbrough gave his last statement, and then the signal was given to start the chemicals.
According to court papers, it takes an average of 4½ minutes for an inmate to die after the chemicals start flowing. But in Yarbrough's case, the process appeared to take about 10 minutes.

I'm posting this story solely to follow the give and take that Freepers offer regarding issue slike this. Personally, I'm in favor of the death penalty though.
Comments or opinions - anyone?
He made me happy that he now won’t be able to kill anyone else.
Unforutnately, Wisconsin abolished the death penalty in 1853, another reason in a long list of reasons of why this state sucks.
Finally some justice for Mr Hamby and his family. One problem:
The execution should have been carried out many years ago.
A little more than 11 years from the time of his crime to the gurney. Not bad. Must have taken at least a year or so to obtain the conviction. Would like to see the time cut about in half, but that’s better than what we’ve seen in the recent past.
From the article: "He was sentenced to die for the May 8, 1997, capital murder of Cyril H. Hamby, 77. Hamby was tied up and nearly decapitated with a knife during a robbery of the small Mecklenburg County business he operated for more than 50 years."
“According to court papers, it takes an average of 4½ minutes for an inmate to die after the chemicals start flowing. But in Yarbrough’s case, the process appeared to take about 10 minutes”
VA’s gonna have to work on their process if they hope to catch up to Texas in execution numbers. Hell, if you can’t find a vein, strangle him
It would be nice if they published a picture of the victim, Cyril H. Hamby. Who gives a rat’s ass about the protestors?
I love happy endings....(sniff)
I wonder why my photo was zapped and yours was not??
btw, I do not feel sorry for him. He should have had his neck sawed at with a pocketknife... what’s good for Mr. Hamby is good enough for him.
Damn, they executed Cuba Gooding Jr!
A small over the nose and mouth gas mask, a plastic tube and a flow regulator, and a tank of 100% pure nitrogen (available from any welding gas supply).
"A man who killed a store owner by sawing at his neck with a pocketknife during a 1997 robbery became on Wednesday the 100th person executed in Virginia since capital punishment was reinstated three decades ago."
“But there are a few out there who believe that only God can judge. “
Where is it written that only God can judge and hold someone accountable? If that were the case then there could be no laws, no personal standards, no personal opinions, no discipline, etc.
I don’t buy a convicted murderer really loves his children.

Something to ponder about what God may judge.
“But there are a few out there who believe that only God can judge.”
I personally do not believe that it is an issue of “judgment”. Had this fool exercised better “judgment” then it would not have been necessary to invoke the death penalty.
I think more along the lines of simply taking vermin from society so that they don’t kill, maim, rape, rob, do drugs, ruin peoples’ lives or exhibit other non-societal behavior ever again.
Yeah, some strange things happen around here sometimes. The photo I just posted came from the Washington Times, so it IS the actual picture (the same you posted). This is the sort of thing the liberal media does with stories like these.
Justice has been served and this guy has had plenty of time to reflect and repent.
