JERUSALEM Some have been taking issue with largely unnoticed comments made last year by Sen. Barack Obama declaring the U.S. is "no longer a Christian nation" but is also a nation of others, including Muslims and nonbelievers.
The comments have been recently recirculating on Internet blogs.
"Whatever we once were, we're no longer a Christian nation. At least not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers," Obama said during a June 2007 speech available on YouTube.
At the speech, Obama also seemingly blasted the "Christian Right" for hijacking religion and using it to divide the nation:
"Somehow, somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked. Part of it's because of the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, who've been all too eager to exploit what divides us," he said.
Asked last year to clarify his remarks, Obama repeated them to the Christian Broadcast Network:
"I think that the right might worry a bit more about the dangers of sectarianism. Whatever we once were, we're no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers," Obama wrote in an e-mail to CBN News senior national correspondent David Brody.
"We should acknowledge this and realize that when we're formulating policies from the state house to the Senate floor to the White House, we've got to work to translate our reasoning into values that are accessible to every one of our citizens, not just members of our own faith community," wrote Obama.
Obama did clarify his statement about the "Christian Right."
"My intention was to

How long before he has to issue a “clarification?”
I wish he would clarify some other clarifications of his
I think he already tried but it AIN’T going to work. He is a fool so let’s encourage him to keep talking.
Obama is a hater.
Never were a Christian nation.
Obama is correct - America is no longer a Christian nation. I don’t think that’s been a particularly good thing considering where we are as a society. Apparently, Obama likes being on the road to destruction.
This guy is a complete bozo! He hasn’t got a clue what he’s talking about, and if the star-struck 20 year olds ever start thinking instead of fawning, he’s done for!
Absolutely, not officially. But we used to operate under Judeo-Christian values. That's fallen by the way-side, and it hasn't been a good thing for this country.
He needs to throw himself under his bus. What an @sshat.
Just how did the Christian right “divide us”?
But not wanting to see innocent babies torn apart in the womb? We’re so bad.
With every passing day, you can see that Obama is a Communist, using propoganda on a scale never before seen in American politics. The MSM is covering for him furiously, but these kind of statements would have caused a Presidential candidate to be scorned out of the race thirty five years ago.
I’m beginning to see how an advanced can fall under the spell of dictator, like Germany in 1933.
We’re seeing it again.
No he is an @ss.
If the dems really think he is unifier boy have they got another thing coming.
And people wonder why we have so many "ails".
As hard as it is to believe judging by the messiah’s flock of disciples, every silly utterance he makes, loses him votes. While there are a number of people who he insults directly, who are so self-loathing that they are only more motivated to vote for him, there are many others who begin to question their support of him more and more. McCain needs to liken his policies to Jimmy Carter as much as possible, and educate the sheeple on real stagflation (14% inflation and 11% unemployment) rather than the current version of it - 5% unemployment and 5% inflation.
Obama: America is ‘no longer Christian’ Democrat says nation also for Muslims, nonbelievers
Interesting since the goal of the Islamofacist intent is to destroy America and even those Muslim not actively fighting against the US support in many ways and means the terrorists.
This sort of statement makes Obama a frightening threat to America.
Yes, but the United States is predominately a Christian nation, which the country is founded on Judeo-Christian values. Obama is not going to win any new votes this way as he comes across as alienating.
Critical thinking is not a skill taught in schools or colleges these days. They just listen to the propaganda and absorb the brainwashing.
“Whatever we once were, we’re no longer a Christian nation. At least not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, and a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers,” Obama said during a June 2007”
Whether one thinks we are a Christian nation or not, that remark is pure nonsense. It’s true that people of those various faiths do live here, but we are not a ______ nation just because members of those faiths are here.
There is a Jewish nation, but that’s Israel, not the USA. There are many Muslim nations, but the USA is definitely not one of them.
There are nations where all those faiths originated, and had profound influence on the cultural development of those nations, going back centuries. But the USA grew out of centuries of cultural development where Christianity was the overwhelming dominant religion, with the parallel beliefs and customs shared with the Jewish faith.
Obama is just sucking up and pandering, but if you want to see a Buddhist nation, or a Muslim nation, or a Hindu nation, there are many to see, but one of them is not the USA.
