WASHINGTON While this year's presidential campaign has been marked by historic firsts, the nominations of senators McCain and Obama will renew one surprising trend: For the fifth time in the last 35 years, America will have a lefty in the White House.
Both major party candidates are southpaws, contributing to a largely unexplained phenomenon that has vexed researchers and historians and drawn notice from a federal judge destined for the Supreme Court. Though left-handers comprise just 10% of the population, they are dominating presidential politics.
Their recent success transcends ideology. Since 1974, presidents Ford, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton have all favored their left hands, while President Carter and the current President Bush are righties. The trait is also not exclusive to winning candidates: Vice President Gore is left-handed, as are past presidential contenders Robert Dole, John Edwards, Bill Bradley, and Ross Perot. A prominent New Yorker who flirted with a White House bid, Mayor Bloomberg, is a lefty.

I figure they’re going to put mccain and hillary together. Either that or lieberman.
OK, I’ll contribute to the thread highjacking since the article was about left handers and not political persuasion but how does that ACU rating compare with other Rep Senators? Better than Olympia Snow?
Is Bob Barr a leftie?
I think many FReepers expect him to win.
Principle surely trumps which hand you favor, doesn’t it?
No one gets everything they want, it's life....McCain wasn't my choice, but he ain't a lefty and all you have to do is listen to the obomba to know McCain is a far cry,in the right, direction from him.
You don't want McCain, then you beeter get on your knees and start praying on the blanket because if it ain't McCain it's the Muslim
Obama is left handed, and McCain is underhanded.
(pssst. Read the article.)
You can say that again!
It certainly does. At least some of us HAVE principles!
Absolutely spot on accurate!
I say “chop off their hands” and maybe their brain will go right.

This is statistically interesting, though I would remove Ford from the list, as he was an appointed president and presumably would not necessarily have been the main gop candidate in 1976 otherwise.
“It certainly does. At least some of us HAVE principles! “
These will certainly be auto-redeemed for an Obama presidency partial vote. You can cash in for 50 cents on the dollar, or for a number much closer to zero. Which will it be?
My vote will have no affect on the outcome of the 2008 Presidential election.
A wide spread exists between a lib leaner and an out and out Marxist!
the closest I ever came to impacting an election was being a FL (palm beach county, no less) voter in 2000.
If my vote in North Carolina impacts the outcome of the General Election, no candidate deserved to win anyway.
Voted twice against Bush's tax cuts
Led the fight on the Senate floor against the Marriage Amendment
Sponsored McCain Feingold
Sponsored McCain Kennedy give the criminals Amnesty
Believes illegals should get social security benefits
Did not support the nuclear option and instead orchestrated the Gang of Fourteen
Believes in the myth of Global warming and supports legislation and the whole carbon credit mess
Attacked the pharmaceutical industry
Accused our troops of practicing torture in Iraq
Supported ACLU trials for terrorists
Wants to close GITMO
Is (was?) against waterboarding
Supports embryonic stem cell research
Said Hillary Clinton would make a fine President
Said Obama was absolutely qualified to be President
Supported John Kerry when he was attacked by Swift Boat ads
Said John Kerry was not weak on defense
Recently said he would support Oil windfall profits tax
Is against drilling in ANWR
Maybe you and I have different standards of what is a conservative and who is a lefty. In my mind, the above positions make someone a leftist and possibly a Marxist.
Until now, It was impossible to find ANY qualification to be President, in either candidate.
