More than two years after a precedent-setting move by the federal government cleared a path around environmental laws and legal challenges, the construction of a stretch of border fence across a deep canyon known as Smuggler's Gulch is set to begin next month.

Proposed additional fencing The project will require cutting earth from surrounding hills and filling in the canyon with more than 2 million cubic yards of dirt, an operation so large that critics fear disastrous environmental consequences.

370 miles complete by the end of this year.

Not a bad start, but this still leaves somewhere around 1,200 miles to go.

I was sitting in the lunchroom at work today when one of our liberal cashiers made a comment about the "highly illegal" border fence and how she couldn't wait until Obama got into the White House so he could tear it down. Before I could respond, Ray, another coworker, tore into her with a full barrage of very well informed responses. I almost would think he is a fellow FReeper, except he doesn't have a computer and hates getting on the internet even when he has access.

With his bare hands no less! I can't wait...when the anti-war folks crap their pants when Obama as CiC takes the USA into Africa. Surprise! (He's a warmonger)

Do you remember some of his responses to her? What was her reaction when he made those remarks?

Filling in an canyon with dirt? Well, that does sound dumb. I am no greenie but it sounds stupid. I suppose at the cost they could make a cheap fence and put a sentry on it for about 200 years.

And 15 feet high = “get on my shoulder or pile up some rocks.”

This is an SFB fence (stuff for brains). The immigration will stop of its own accord if the employers follow the law and the government quits giving out free goodies.

....that’s just an arroyo....

My westspeak is not great. Distinguish if you will, the difference between a canyon and a gulf.

A canyon is I believe a water course cut down from the surrounding mesa?

Arroyo?

my american heritage dictionary says:

” a deep gully cut by an intermittent stream; a dry gulch....”

all of the american southwest has arroyos, one of the more famous being the arroyo seco in pasadena. a dry gulch. usually with rattlesnakes.

the name is prominent in tucson. if you drive your car through an arroyo, or even smaller dip in the road, as you notice a thunderstorm over the catalinas, you may not survive the flood of water.

the word probably comes from the spanish, who were white and here before the mexicans.

arroyo comes from the latin word for a gallieried mine.

Sorry, but I got into a discussion on gun control with another coworker and was only half-listening to their conversation.

I remember that he pointed out the increased violent gang activity among illegal immigrants, the fact that they are no licensed to operate vehicles but do so anyway, and the danger of having terrorists sneak across our southern border without being detected to unleash another 9-11 style attack.

Dude-— if you know for certain they are illegal, then I would be reporting them on a daily basis to every authority I could get a phone number for. I would not stop until they were either gone, or I was arrested...

Local law enforcement won’t do anything. Called them again last night and I don’t believe they ever did come out (it’s low priority, nevermind that thanks to a physical condition of labyrinthitis, to me, it’s quite literally assault and battery because it often can make me violently nauseous, and there’s nowhere in the house to escape it, it penetrates through thick walls and even the dirt in the crawl space). The cops CANNOT ask if they are illegal, so once again, less than useless. They have invaded my city en masse and turned everything they have moved into to $hit.

File a lawsuit against the city/municipality for failing to do their duty.

It’s less an issue of failing to do their duty and more of one of having their hands tied and having to follow specific local guidelines. Add to that you have an undermanned department having to deal daily with rapes, robberies, assaults, and murders, reporting “loud noise” is about as far down the totem pole of priorities as jaywalking.

A police officer told one of my parents that there IS no such law for “disturbing the peace.” If a bunch of folks happen to call on noise for one location, it might be moved up in priority, but not by much. I threatened the lady that still owns the house renting out to these people that if she didn’t get the situation under control, we’d sue them to the tune of 5 figures. She claimed she had no control over them and that they were “nice people” (bull$hit, they aren’t nice in the least, they’re liars, giving us a phony phone number, their yard is littered with trash, we see different cars coming in and out at all times of the day, they do strange things in their backyard where they erected a massive ugly fence on a slope that flooded our patio — and I listen closely for roosters, of which I heard one last week, because that will be an indication of cockfighting, which the police DO take seriously).

For awhile after I made the threat, the noise did abate, but it’s still occurring on and off enough times to be a nuisance. Mind you, the source of the noise isn’t from their house, but from a truck they park on the other side of their property and they turn up the stereo full tilt that it rattles windows from a few hundred feet away. I have no intention of confronting them unarmed, since I know full well illegals have little concern for many other laws as well, and drunken ones even less so.

Thanks. I find it astonishing, given the level of illegal invasion in Middle TN that we don’t have our own office.
