WASHINGTON -- With the Democratic presidential nomination in his grasp, Sen. Barack Obama is making a full-throttle push for centrist evangelicals and Catholics.
It's a move that's caught some conservative evangelicals off guard. They say they are surprised and dismayed to see a liberal-minded politician attempting to conscript their troops. At the same time, they say that Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has done little to court their affections.
"I've never seen anything quite like it before," said evangelical author Stephen Mansfield, who wrote "The Faith of George W. Bush" and has a forthcoming book about Obama.
"To be running against a dyed-in-the-wool Republican, and to be reaching into the Christian community as wisely and knowledgeably as (Obama) is -- understanding their terms and their values -- is just remarkable."
This month, the Illinois senator held a closed-door meeting in Chicago with almost 40 Christian leaders, including evangelical heavyweights such as the Rev. Franklin Graham, publishing magnate Steve Strang and megachurch pastor Bishop T.D. Jakes.
Obama's campaign is also launching a grass-roots effort, tentatively called Joshua Generation, with plans to hold concerts and house meetings targeted at young evangelicals and Catholics.
A political action committee set to launch this month, the Matthew 25 Network, plans to direct radio advertising and mailers to Christian communities while talking up Obama in the media. The group is not officially tied to the Obama campaign.
Obama's emphasis on faith outreach plays to his strengths, campaign observers say. The senator is at ease speaking about religion and preaches a message of forging common ground with disparate communities.
Still, some religious leaders wonder whether Obama's Christian-focused outreach might alienate Jewish and Muslim voters, for example, not to mention the Democratic Party's large secular wing.

Didn’t he attend a madrassa?
Well, Howard Dean once said that Democrats share a lot of values with the evangelical community.
And he said that Democrats have good values. And that among Democrat values are that they think children shouldn’t go to bed hungry at night. I know that Democrats have pushed and expanded the food stamp program. It’s hard to believe that anyone is going hungry in this country.
He’s been running ads here in Wisconsin finally admitting to the fact that he’s half WHITE and that his WHITE mother and WHITE Grandparents raised him.
So much for being the first “Black” Candidate. *Rolleyes*
Sorry, but this man has nothing to offer true Christians, evangelical or otherwise. Anyone saying he does is operqating under a strong delusion...or has been simply bought and paid for.
Sorry, but no matter how you try to frame it or say it, that dog will not hunt.

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Michelle Obama, the attorney wife of pro-abortion Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, is coming under fire for a letter she wrote defending partial-birth abortions. The 2004 letter, written to help Obama in his campaign for his U.S. Senate seat, opposes the ban on the abortion procedure...
I used to be one, but I'm not anymore and I am not voting for the Obamanation!
Obama contends belief in Jesus Christ not necessary for salvation

Absolutely.
It would be one thing if Mr. Obama actually engaged in some more lying (e.g., 'I'm actually against partial birth abortions; I oppose homosexual marriages; etc') - but he doesn't even make the effort... What's his plan? Just to constantly parrot the lie line: 'vote for me because I am a committed christian?'
How is that supposed to work?
It doesn't take a lot of effort (the MSM embargo on any 'discouraging words' regarding the Obama, notwithstanding) to find out that this guy supports infanticide, homosexual marriages, and he took up shop in a racist - Christ blaspheming - church for 20 years...
...But he's a committed christian...
I have lived outside the USA for 12 of my 50 years. Most of the housing project I’ve seen in the States look like palaces compared to the dumps peope live in in Third-
world countries. Most Americans don’t understand or appreciate how good they have it.
bump for publicity
Obama is not a Christian!

My daughter has been on mission trips to India and Uganda and she would agree. I thank God I live in the United States.
I doubt he learned much about Christianity listening to Wright for 20 years.
Damn Mongolians.
Another change should be made to the Great Seal — the roof of the Capitol building should be replaced with an image of a mosque with crescent moon.
Does this now mean that Obama is pro-life and pro-family (marriage a union between one man and one woman)? Or does he still support murder of children via abortion? Does he still support homosexual marriage that is a mockery of marriage and family? Does he support lower taxes? Or does he need more money to pay for new social programs, global health care, UN dues, and reparations?
The O-man in 2004: “Right. Jesus is a historical figure for me, and hes also a bridge between God and man, in the Christian faith, and one that I think is powerful precisely because he serves as that means of us reaching something higher. And hes also a wonderful teacher. I think its important for all of us, of whatever faith, to have teachers in the flesh and also teachers in history.”
