A public school board in Ohio voted unanimously today to proceed with firing an eighth-grade teacher for allegedly teaching his Christian beliefs in science classes and "branding" students with crosses.
Responding to an investigation, the Mount Vernon School District board voted 5-0 to consider termination of John Freshwater's contract at its next meeting, July 7.
The report presented to the board today charged Freshwater used a high-frequency generator a Tesla coil to make a cross on the arms of students, taught the theory of intelligent design and refused to remove all religious articles from his classroom.
Board president Ian Watson told the Mount Vernon News the panel will proceed with termination at its July 7 meeting, unless Freshwater files a written request for a hearing within 10 days of receiving notice of the board's intent to fire him.
Freshwater and the school board have been sued by the parents of a student who says the teacher violated their son's civil rights by branding him on the arm with a cross. The mark lasted four weeks, the parents claim.
But a spokesman for Freshwater, Dave Daubenmire, downplayed the parents' accusations and called the investigation one-sided, with "old trumped-up charges brought back to the table."

What’s wrong with America? I don’t see anything in the constitution prohibiting the free use of branding in schools.
I wonder if he had used a Muslim crescent?
Did the student ask for it? The “high frequency Tesla coil” makes a temporary mark that goes away quickly (days not weeks)
So, the defense to a charge that a public school teacher branded minors with a symbol of his faith is that it's happened before and this old news.
Really?
You don't brand kids in school period. Would you want him kept on if it HAD beed a muslim crescent?
READ THE ARTICLE AGAIN BEFORE YOU KNEE-JERK A RESPONSE
just because thay are CALLING IT BRANDING does not make it branding.
oh and I WAS POINTING OUT THAT THE”Y ARE OBJECTING TO A CROSS MORE THAN THE ACT ISTELF
Where the HELL did you ge the idea I would approve of a cresent or gay flag? I was pointing out that the SCHOOL would have loved it then (my conjecture, obviously)
did you have your coffee yet?
Call it “marking” them then. He was another one of those teachers who felt his personal faith was more important than his job. That’s great; his reward awaits him in heaven. They were right, however, to fire him because he not only broke the law, he was guilty of insubordination and being stupid. You can’t touch kids these days let alone mark them with a cross or an X.
So you are okay with marking kids with a cross, but nothing else?
Shhhhhhhh ... don’t wake them from their dream. ;)
THAT'S why he's being let go.
I want to hear from the teacher. I read some quotes that sounded rational to me. As a fellow Christian, I want to know if he did this. If he did, he should be fired. However, there is an anti-Christian bias in the educational world and they hate anyone who calls themselves a Christian and so I am withholding judgment until I hear his defense.
It was about the use of the word branding, and how many believe it to have been branding, as in cattle branding.
Thanks for playing.
What’s the symbol for Atheist?
It’s not a brand if it fades away in four weeks and it’s something the teachers has been doing as a science experiment for 21 years.
Read the article. He admits to branding them but says it was an X, not a cross.
If you look at the photo, it is a cross, not an X.
yer a dumbass
