McCain-Lieberman Could Be Just the Ticket
Pajamas Media ^ | June 20, 2008 | Jennifer Rubin

From time to time a conservative pundit has suggested that John McCain choose a Democrat for his vice presidential running mate. That usually has been met with howls of derision from other conservatives who find the notion preposterous. But is it?

The main reason is obvious: the untimely demise of McCain would allow a Democrat to ascend to the White House, forfeiting his party’s victory and reversing the popular mandate for a Republican president. (Let’s leave aside for now whether a McCain victory would represent a Republican mandate or a miracle, despite his party affiliation.)

But let’s consider if one specific Democrat, Senator Joseph Lieberman, might make sense as a VP selection for McCain. McCain at times has fueled speculation about Lieberman with effusive praise:

“He’d be a great partner in any endeavor, including joining America together,” McCain said in response to a question on the Lieberman factor. “Let’s reach across the aisle, let’s work together for America. That’s what Joe Lieberman is all about.”

Except for his backing of the Iraq war, Lieberman is a screaming, yelling … running down the street in liberal clothing proclaiming his liberalism … well, liberal.

Lieberman is an honest man who loves this country and would look out for it if, God forbid, something happened to John McCain. He has a few negatives, though, and though he might appeal to a few older voters who would ordinarily go democratic, Joe Lieberman might not be the best possible running mate for Senator McCain. Let’s hear some other possibilities, especially some who are not from this deservedly much-maligned congress.

Yeah, so to defeat a Democrat, have the GOP put a Democrat on the ticket.

The United States is an insane asylum.

Romney is for drilling in ANWR as an example. Mitt does not follow the global warming theory and on I can go. From hearing Mitt on talk radio and the speeches he has given I would say you are way off base. Giuliani is not as far left as Lieberman.

As to Crist I have not heard anything I like except his turn around on offshore drilling. The only thing Lieberman has going for him is his support on the war on terror.

Why? Zell Miller supported CFR aka McCain-Feingold. You see it’s okay for Fred and Zel to vote for it, and Bush to sign it in to law, but McCain gets demonized for it.

The thought that the Rep. party would nominate two moderate Dems to the top of the ticket makes me think I'm living in Bazaro world.

You're witnessing the rise of the Republicrat party thanks due to the GOP moving far enough to the socialist left over the years to expand their voter base by appeasing socialists. The result is increasingly socialist candidates like McCain.

I like Joe. He’s one of the few straight shooters in D. C.

You obviously don't live in Connecticut.

Lieberman? If your going to move left, I’d prefer Rudy...he’s light years more “conservative” than Lieberman economically

Economics? I think we have our signals crossed. I was suggesting Lieberman, if he were to serve in a McCain administration, would be best suited as Sec of Defense. Joe's been pretty strong on defense overall. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my first post.

Mind you, I'm not saying Joe would necessarily be my first choice for SecDef, just that I'd rather have him there than as the VP.

I don’t think conservative voters would be too happy with the choice of Lieberman as his running mate. Many conservatives would take this as a sign that McCain doesn’t care about their vote. It would definitely be a risky choice.

lieberman is not a democrat,

Think again. That is what LIEberman wants you to believe. For all intense and purposes he is still a Democrat as per the following article.

Is Joe Lieberman Still a Democrat?

Lieberman is no worse than some of the other names I’ve heard: Crist, Romney, Giuliani...

That's an accurate statement considering socialists run in both parties.
