McCain mingles with Clinton supporters
Politico ^ | June 14, 2008 | Ben Smith

Posted on 06/19/2008 7:20:44 PM PDT by Checkers

After his public conference call with Clinton supporters (covered extensively by Jonathan Martin) Saturday, John McCain met privately with some 75 of those supporters at his Virginia headquarters, two people who were there said.

McCain's staff extended the last-minute invitation to Clinton die-hards, including a founder of a group called "Party Unity, My Ass" (PUMA), and substantial numbers came from Washington and New York. They represented passionate campaign volunteers and supporters, but they're essentially a marginal group in Clinton's orbit, including no one with a prominent campaign role, public office or close relationship with the candidate.

"He stayed for a good almost half hour afterwards shaking hands, listening to our concerns, talking to us," said PUMA founder Will Bower, who said he thought many of the people there would vote for McCain.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina stayed to mingle with the crowd, whose members also included Clinton backer Harriet Christian, made momentarily famous on YouTube for getting ejected from the Rules & Bylaws press area.

Bower said he'd liked McCain's answer on judges, in which he "pointed out that he supported Bill Clinton with both Ginsberg and Breyer."

Another person who was present, but asked not to be named to avoid conflict with fellow Democrats, said he'd pressed a McCain staffer on McCain's position on same-sex marriage.

The staffer "said it was the same as [John] Kerry's position," he said.

My gut feeling? This man knows how to “handle” his captors. And right now, he IS “captive” to a bunch of Moonbats, but he needs their votes, too. He made it out ALIVE after five years in a Communist POW camp. You don’t do that without knowing your enemy and outsmarting them at every turn. Don’t “misunderestimate” him. ;) And why was it OK for Mrs. Bill Clinton to appeal to the middle, but it’s not OK for McCain to use the same political tact?

I think once he’s in office, the hammer is coming down.

That’s my best case scenario. :)

The worst case scenario? Four years of Obama-Lama-Ding-Dong, and both a House and Senate under Democrat control.

Some here seem to want that. And I don’t understand it.

He seems to be having a lot of private meetings:
Inside McCain’s closed-door meeting with Chicago Hispanics

Illinois Hispanics meet with Juan McCain in Downtown Chicago (vanity)

Hope you guys don't mind my pinging you to this thread, but I thought you'd find it interesting.

Yep. We ‘Broken Glass Republicans’ play the hand we are dealt. :)

I wasn’t 100% for George Bush, either...but he stemmed the Red Tide in a few ways over the past eight years.

Republicans are good for one thing only; Defense. They SUCK on Offense, LOL!

No great fan of McCain but between Marxist Obama and the third party folks who would make it possible for Marxist Obama to win, McCain looks good

Not to worry. It was reported today that Obama is refusing public financing for his campaign and will raise about $500 million for his campaign. So, it’s over for McCain. You won’t have to worry about him being in the White House. IT’S OVER !!!

Personally, I worry about ANY of them being in the WH (remember, Hillary! only ‘suspended’ her campaign).

When McCain was first elected in Arizona during the Reagan years, he was a foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution. He was consistantly conservative. As Arizona grew we noticed that we were competing for his time and attention. There were more people and more liberals and a new brand of moderates. He was no longer an automatic vote. We had to justify our positions.

Those who could justify their positions recieved a fair and even preferential hearing. The "hain't the way it uster be" conservatives tended to be pushed to the sidelines. We were up against some pretty sharp cookies on the other side and if you couldn't hold your ground in those circumstances, you got steamrolled.

There is no doubt in my mind that McCain is basically a conservative. He just isn't a stick-your-head-up-your-behind conservative.

Well I held my nose and voted for Bush. What I got was snide comments that I knew what I was getting when I voted for him and called a "nativist" and "Vigilante" by him. Now I'm supposed to hold my nose and vote for someone far worse. Claims that the Clinton socialists are remotely like the Reagan Democrats goes beyond the pale. I see no evidence that he'll put the "hammer down" on anyone other than the same conservatives he's always attacked.

“Maybe Juan is turning the Obamination’s game back around on him ??? Hmmmm”

yes, I really do think that’s a lot of what we see and hear going on right now, he needs to do what he needs to do, and if played right, could gain a lot of disgruntled HRC supporters.

before we all have heart attacks over much of what he says that is galling, we should consider that some (maybe a lot) of it is just the election pandering game. I even think that about all the environmental BS - he’ll have a LOT more on his plate to deal with anyway, and he’s come around on offshore drilling - this one can, if worked properly, be a KEY advantage in the race, considering BHO’s ludicrous (and now unpopular) positions on energy.

Okay, hit me, beat me now :-))))))))))))

“Some here seem to want that. And I don’t understand it.”

Diana - LOVED your post, so well said!!! I totally concur and didn’t say it nearly as well as you. Think you’re spot-on about the situation and that, yes, perhaps we’re underestimating his astuteness in this. Because one thing I DO see in JSM that I never did in Fred Thompson is that necessary Fire in the Belly. And he’ll really need it.

right again. B. Hussein is much better on Offense - against America and all we’ve stood for.

One thing to remember is that he considers himself honor-bound to keep his word. If he says that he will appoint a three legged lesbian as Secretary of H&HS, he will. If circumstances change, he will also but he will try to keep his word.
