AP Disavows CBSNews.com Story Making Quake/Climate Link Claim; Story Pulled
businessandmedia.org ^ | June 19, 2008 | Jeff Poor

Almost every day a news report comes out linking something to climate change – obesity, food riots or a century of wildfires. Some of the claims seem especially outlandish. Sometimes they are.

On June 18, CBS.com posted a story claiming that global seismic activity on Earth is now five times more energetic than it was just 20 years ago because of global warming. The story had no byline, but was attributed to the Associated Press. The story was identical to a June 17 Market Wire press release attributed to Tom Chalko, the scientist that made the claim of the earthquake/global warming link.

However, as of 3 p.m. on June 19, the CBS.com story was no longer available and both CBS.com and AP were blaming the other side for report.

Sunspots cause earthquakes. There are no sunspots, well, just the one very minor 999, and there are still earthquakes, so maybe something else is involved.

Not at all a screw up.

Just think of it as a trial balloon that the media put out to see just how much of their BS people will believe.

It's the "theory" part that got me to laughing ~ it was so hard I almost choked on my saliva.

Gad, just where do you guys find this stuff. And no wonder CBS is on the "media death watch" list. What is it, 10% a month loss of advertising revenues ~ they'll be gone shortly and then there'll be no one left to broadcast this sort of nonsense.

a climatologist and an associated professor at the University of Delaware,

Poor Dr. Legates! Can't call himself State Climatologist anymore, and now people can't even get his title right.

Call me crazy but I’m guessing movement of tectonic plates cause earthquakes. The AP should pay the rates to readers they just implemented for copying and pasting their stories.

Global Warming causes earthquakes as the mainstream media gets more hysterical. One day it will be common knowledge that global warming is a hoax.

Heretic. Your children will be educated by the state and you will be made to confess your crimes against the environment. RFK’s sainted namesake son has spoken.

Who owns AP?

It's a not-for-profit cooperative owned by the 1,500 or so subscriber newspapers/media outlets.

Dr. Luboš Motl, a former Harvard physicist called Chalko an “übercrackpot” on his blog on June 19 and questioned Chalko’s claim about the increase in seismic energy.

LOL! No real comment other than that. I only copied it for the umlaut.

Damn! You mean I wasted all that money I spent building an earthquake shelter, after reading their story?!?

Next thing, they’ll be telling us that Global Warming is a hoax, too!

Is there no end to media perfidy?
