Heard the speech on Boortz’ show. Awesome, hit all the salient points, showed how clear the path is to being energy independent, showed that it’s primarily the do-nothing Democrats in Congress (although there is no shortage of Republicans to blame, too).

“If he was REALLY serious, he would declare our oil to be a matter of Strategic National Security and open drilling by presidential order.

He has that authority under existing laws that grant that very same authority to ... Saudi Arabia and all of OPEC.”

Then why doesn’t he just do it??

Carbon emissions do not fall under that treaty or our laws.
Oil does, and Bush can do it.

The hussein will do whatever he pleases irrespective of what Bush does or does not do.
They are not causally linked.

Clinton did, he vetoed a package that came with drilling. Then he made it a wildlife preserve / refuge.

for details

Apparently you didn’t listen to the President. He wants refining capacity expanded and appeals opening a refinery held to 60 days and to go through the DC circuit court. He wants the red tape and lawsuits to stop.

have no clue what the country went through during Jimmah Carter's presidency.

God, how I learned to hate that man.

I remember only being allowed gas on even or odd days, depending on your tag number.

Taking a trip? Tough luck.

Born in 1971.

So you were about five years old when we were sitting in gas lines for hours waiting to get our 4 gallon allocation.

This country is pathetically naive. The military is the only branch of government that looks beyond a 10 year horizon (for weapon systems). Commercial interests and concerns on the economy and national security (energy) are ignored.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised since a large proportion of the population never plan for retirement.

Yup! I remember neighbors “exchanging” plates so one could fill up on any given day.

The problem is, as common sensical as all these proposals are, there is no way Democrats will pass them. In fact, there’s a 0.0000000% that Democrats will pass these before November, and probably a .0001% they will pass these proposals after November. Even IF McCain wins and would like to drill offshore, the solidly Democratic Congress will block him at every step. The only way this might change is if gasoline hits $8-10 per gallon+ and there are literally riots in the street and Washington over it. But until then, Democrats would rather throw average Americans under the bus in order to appease the most irrational environmentalists.

They need to do both. Declare it a National Security issue and order ANWAR open by Executive Order.
