Oil From ANWR Would Help a Lot In his June 14 letter, Charles Schumer writes that oil production from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge "would reduce U.S. dependence on foreign imports by less than two percent." What? The production potential from the 2,000 acre coastal plain of ANWR is estimated to be one million barrels per day. We currently import almost 10 million barrels per day, so ANWR production could reduce our foreign dependence by more than 11%. Moreover, we get about two million BPD from Canada and about one million from Mexico, so the one million barrels from ANWR could reduce our non-North American imports by more than 16%. Somebody needs to teach Sen. Schumer how to use a spreadsheet. Richard Mirsky Falls Church, Va.

If we showed the world we were serious about drilling, oil prices would drop significantly OVERNIGHT.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this wouldn’t be American oil for America, it would be oil going on to the world market; the exchange. We don’t have state run oil, so there’s no guarantee where it’s going, right? Because, as bad as the price at the pump gets, I’m not crying the Socialist state-owned ‘uncle.’
If Schumer went to college I am sure his degree was that of an A$$!(cum laude)
Republicans have a winning issue here. Would be nice to see Bush get the ball rolling.
But of course they do. Democrats have wanted higher oil prices for many years. Now it’s time to hang them around their necks. Can the Republicans accomplish that easy task? I have my doubts.
Democrats would give ANWR drilling rights to the Chinese before they would Exxon.
He’s lying but it’s OK....Trying to save the planet.
What is up with Schumer lately - last week he was talking about giving eastern europe back to Russia?
Doesnt he want us to compete with Russia oil oligarchs?
Doesn't matter.
Even if ANWR oil went somewhere other than America, the revenue from that oil offsets what we pay for existing imports.
Furthermore, whoever bought that oil would then not be buying that oil from the existing world market, reducing overall competition for that oil.
Not only are you absolutely correct, I would go so far as to say that if the White House AND Congress proclaimed that we were starting a ‘moon shot’ campaign to become energy independant by 2015, the world would see that the insane prices on oil are completely artificial and not the fault of the American run oil companies. And sadly, THAT TRUTH is precisely why the democrap party bastards will refuse to make such a committment for it would remove their wedge issue they use to manip[ulate the American voters. The democrat party is the precise reason we are in the trouble we are in now! Ask yourself how far back drilling in ANWR was proposed and whom blocked it and continues to do so. Osama Obama says drilling will not help for five years ... more than ten years ago drilling in ANWR was proposed and blocked by the same democrap party Osama Obama now represents. ... And if anyone is wondering, we could be energy independent by 2015 or at least 80% so!
We count all of our domestic oil. Whether or not some gets sold overseas, if you produced enough here to meet our needs, in a crisis we would be self sufficient. Further, our increased production will reduce world oil prices.
Right, that’s my point. You’d have to tame the world market with our oil. I think too many people think, this’ll be American oil for the Americans.
To qualify-American Big Oil
In a very real sense, our setting out to become energy independant would effect/reduce starvation in other parts of the world. But democrats don’t give a damn about whom they are responsible for killing so long as the killing empowers democrats. ... And if you doubt it, consider their defense and promotion of partial birth infanticide for empowerment.
