Miniature Golf is the New Constitutional Right
Townhall.com ^ | 16 June 2008 | David Strom

The Bush Administration has discovered what liberals have known all along: the Constitution is a mighty comprehensive document, giving the federal government powers over the minutest aspects of our lives.

Case in point: apparently Bush & Co. have discovered that there is a right to miniature golf defined in the U.S. Constitution.

That’s the upshot of a new set of rules updating the Americans with Disabilities Act being released for public comment this Tuesday. Other new rights include easier access to light switches in hotel rooms by moving them 6 inches lower, wheelchair lifts in courtrooms to provide easier access to the witness box, and wheelchair lifts to provide easier access to stages in auditoriums. And the miniature golf courses? Soon at least half the holes will have to be easily wheelchair accessible.

Sadly, Bush's legacy will include more damage to the independence of individual rights.

It seems to be the way Washington, in general, is going these days. Freedom comes at a price, always has. People are going to have to stand up and demand those rights...

Sadly, this is a Bob Dole legacy, not George Bush. The Americans with Disabilities Act was his baby.

But now it seems that only a few libertarians still feel bound to even consider the possibility of limits to federal powers before proposing the imposition of ever more burdensome rules from Washington.

Libertarian ping! To be added or removed freepmail me or post a message here.

"Soon at least half the holes will have to be easily wheelchair accessible."

Ahhhh! Damn! Put-Put courses are going to be ruined, and lawyers are going to get a little more wealthy from it!

I predicted this ridiculous development 16 years ago, when the ADA first was adopted and the professional whiners immediately went out looking for potential violations and monetary damages, to say nothing of exorbitant legal fees.
Among the funniest memories...

A subdivision I designed where wheelchair ramps were made mandatory, in a network of streets all over 15% grade... Skateboard heaven, but death wish for wheelchairs...
Then there was a proposed indoor skateboard park (which was never built) where there was a mandatory requirement of four handicapped parking spaces... One handicapped space = 1.5 regular spaces, = 2 compact spaces. In a commercial area parking spaces have the same intrinsic value as the space the structures are built on...

why a chair lift for the witness stand, reasonable accommodation would be handing the mike to the witness so they can answer from the wheel chair.

Are you joking. Probably not. A friend added a sound room to his bar with a nice stage. Previously the bands had to play at the end of a long room on a small stage, about 6” high, with a pillar in the middle of it.

The new room was designed from the ground up for music and has a nice 3 foot high stage. Even when it’s wall to wall people you can see the band. Only problem: the zoners wanted a HC ramp. Has to be 1 in 6 grade, which means 18’ of ramp, only all ramps longer than 15’ need a 4’ flat rest zone in the middle,so call it 22’ of ramp. If laid out in the relatively small room it would have taken over 1/2 of the total floor space.

The main acts are bar bands, punk rockers and nuevo rock-a-billy.

Somehow he finally got them to piss off, I think campaign donations were involved.

The USA is now like the Soviet Union was: we are all at the whimsy of political apointees. They have power, we are kulacks. How sad.

Our founders would be ashamed that we haven’t started another war already, I am sure.

The world turned upside down. Just watched Planet of the Apes last night, but couldn’t make it through the second one.
