Anger boils in Europe over rising fuel prices ($10/gallon)
The Chronicle Herald ^ | June 15, 2008 | Shelley Emling

Angered by soaring fuel prices, Europeans are protesting and taking a toll on consumers and companies by creating food stores shortages, lighting highways in the death of two people in Spain and Portugal.

Amid warnings at the price of oil could sort of perhaps $250 a barrel within 18 months, EU officials plan to meet next week to consider solution to surging food and fuel costs.

Adam McCarthy says he now spends nearly €60, or about $93, to fill up his Volvo, and he expects protests to continue across to Europe as drivers become increasingly frustrated.

"Wow, like minds and all that..."

When I saw your post I couldn't tell if you were mocking me or what. Very strange that the wording was exact.

Welcome to the future of the US....unless something radically changes IMHO.

If there is *one* good thing about ridiculous gas prices, it will be the backlash against the "greening" of America. Touchy-Feely environmentalism is fine and dandy until it starts to hit people in the wallet.

See the backlash against Ethanol that's starting.

the Europeans are going to want Uncle Sam to invade someplace like Iraq and take all their oil.

Well Iran doesn't seem to need their oil since they are pursuing Nuclear power *cough, cough*. I heard they have tankers already filled up at anchor in the Persian Gulf. Just got pilot them away.

The hyperwealthy are increasing their wealth on the backs of the everday people at this point for no other reason than flat out greed. This is historically how those people both figuratively and literally have wound up losing their heads.

These folks are not only jeapardizing our nations and others with this crap, they are undermining the very fundamental support of the capitalist system by their greed. The more widespread and longer this crap keeps up, the more hostile the masses will become to the capitalist ideal, and the more willing they will be to accept the arguments of the socialists and communists.

These few people are risking the stability of the entire world to pad their pockets... and the politicos are just fiddling while Rome burns because they’ve gotten theirs.

Every one of us should make sure that our children and granschildren read this article. Lefties like Jeremy Rifkin want us to become more like Europe. We need to make sure that our young people know what Europe is really like before we take the advice of people like Rifkin (author of the book, The European Dream: How Europe's Vision of the Future is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream).

“The hyperwealthy are increasing their wealth”

Who are the hyperwealthy and how are they doing it?

Are you just talking about speculators that are typically investing for a group or individuals or what?

I’m interested in who you think is primarily benefiting from this.

Talking about the hedge fund speculation mostly in this case.

The second gilded age is upon us, and its fallout is going to be just as ugly, and probably moreso than the firsts.

“I don’t see $250 a barrel. There will be a world wide riot first. I read where strategic planners around the world are planning for $225/bbl oil within the next 24 months.......... “

Then there will be war, on who’s door step is the question...?

Exactly on point. Most ordinary folks don’t pay attention to the crap that politicians try to get away with until hits them directly in the pocket book every day. Well, 4 buck gas is starting to do that. It was a significant factor in the failure of the Leiberman-Warner carbon cap-and-trade and wealth redistribution bill, which in reality turns out to be a good thing. And while $4 gas might seem high most folks are managing to cope by cutting back on driving or other expenses. People bitch a lot but they are not motivated to extreme action.

Frankly I hope gasoline does hit $10 a gallon in the US. That will generate true public outrage, the kind no politician can afford to ignore. Then we’ll see how important dealing with “climate change” and protecting the polar bear really is.

At the end of the day it may turn out that $10 gas was really a blessing in disguise.

Riddle me this Batman, if the dollar is so week and the Euro is so strong how can their fuel cost increases be paralleling ours in the US?

Inquiring minds want to know.

What a silly thread!

We have been told by mental deficients, right here on FR for decades that the Europeans love high fuel prices and we should feel "lucky" that we are getting almost "free gas" by comparison.

Why do the Europeans love high fuel prices? Just because. Or perhaps because it helps to fund the Socialist paradises there...

I don't see $250 a barrel. There will be a world wide riot first.

Did you forget how many "experts" and sane civilians said the exact same thing about $150 oil?

Now might be a good time to repeat my encouragement for serious informed citizens to read the perfect "zero" prediction record of "experts":
