MILITARY: Judge dismisses charges against Marine (Haditha)

CAMP PENDLETON ---- A military judge has dismissed charges against a Marine officer accused of failing to investigate the killings of 24 Iraqis.

Col. Steven Folsom dismissed charges Tuesday against Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani after defense attorneys raised concerns that a four-star general overseeing the prosecution was improperly influenced by an investigator probing the November 2005 shootings by a Marine squad in Haditha.

The charges were dismissed without prejudice, meaning they can be refiled, but Folsom excluded Marine Forces Central Command from future involvement.

Chessani was the highest-ranking officer implicated in the case.

Good news, but I would have preferred that the charges be dismissed WITH prejudice. This innocent man has been through enough.

I just called Murtha's office (thank you for posting the number for me) and spoke with a gravelly-voiced dame.

I told her that I was reading a news report that "A military judge has dismissed charges against a Marine officer accused of failing to investigate the killings of 24 Iraqis in Haditha. I was wondering if your offices would be issuing an apology from Mr. Murtha for calling those Marines murderers..."

She cut me off at that point and said, "I doubt that very much. Thank you for calling."

I just spoke with a White House operator, asking President Bush to fire those 4 stars. Also asked her to ask how could he ask those men to risk their lives, and then allow his administration to persecute them , and I hoped he would have a remedy for that.

LOL! I just called the PA office and said; "I see that Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani was just exonerated...the 7th of the 8 Haditha Marines. I was wondering if murtha would be making a statement or issuing an apology."

She (pleasant sounding woman) said she would have no idea, but he is in DC today if I would like to call there.

No problem. Just for entertainment purposes, I looked up Murtha's DC office number and I made a long distance call to them, too.

This time, the young guy I spoke with was more conversational. He said that Murtha never callled the Haditha Marines murderers (spin, spin, spin); and that Murtha would not comment because the trial was still ongoing.

I asked if he would apologize when all the trials were done and the Marines he called cold-blooded murderers were cleared. His answer? "I cannot predict what the congressman will do."

Just called Johnstown office and said I was calling from WA state and is Murtha going to apologize to Haditha Marines.

Lady was polite but sounded a lttle exasperated and said I’d have to call the Washington office because his press secretary is there.

I called and the line was busy.

I believe they’re getting a little upset.
