/ Iowa and Beijing, China - From where Ruth Lycke sits, it comes as no surprise that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke would warn that rising health costs may pose an economic risk.
She's seen the rising cost of health care emptying the wallets of her clients for several years now.
"My clients can't afford health care treatment in the United States," says Ruth Lycke, CEO of China Connection, an Iowa and China-based company and foundation that helps Americans and other foreigners seek medical treatment in China. "These people go to China because the care in China is affordable, reliable and available."
The skyrocketing costs of health care are most acute, of course, for those who are uninsured or underinsured.
How much could a patient save by going to China? Here are some numbers from Lycke:
-Stroke treatment could cost $500,000 in the U.S. for three months treatment. In China, similar care would cost $16,500.
-Hip surgery runs $60,000 in the U.S.; it costs $6,000 in China.
-Cardiac bypass runs $60,000 in the U.S.; it's about $8,000 in China.

Do you get to choose whose parts you get?

(rolls eyes) Everyone KNOWS the best deals are in India....
“”These people go to China because the care in China is affordable, reliable and available.”

You get what you pay for. Of course, the Chicoms are so “reliable; that they even sell us toys with LEAD in it.
I didn’t read the article and I don’t believe a word of it.
Either India (English-speaking, highly educated) or the Philippines (English-speaking, 90% Christian) are the best deals at this point. I have seen many Filipino doctors with diplomas from US schools on their walls.
Huge problem . People are buying prisoner organs so family members can cash in. Bizarre and sick.
Hepatitis b, hepatitis C endemic...
Hey, but it's cheap! And when the hepatitis I contracted during my cheap Chinese surgery trashes my liver with hepatocellular carcinoma, I can get another one really cheap and without a wait, in China. That Chinese prisoner doesn't need it anymore.
This woman apparently had a stroke and went to China for followup care. She now has a business taking people to China for (mostly) elective surgeries.
I’d rather go to Korea, India or the Philippines. When I lived in South Korea, I got all 4 wisdom teeth pulled for about $100, including the meds I had to take afterwards. Mine were pretty easy, only 1 had to be cut out and that was still not a huge deal.
The same procedure here would have cost about $1500 at the time. Basically, I saved the price of the roundtrip airplane ticket to and from Seoul.
I’ve also read that some people go to South Africa for plastic surgery and go on safari while they are there.
.. and if you need body parts you get to pick the body, even talk to the donor if you wish!
My fortune cookie says: BAWAWA HAHA LOL!
I’m going to China to get a huge injection of lead!
LOL! You are sooo right! Every time I turn around, I’m reading or hearing about another American going to China for their surgery, don’t you know....
I'm dreading the entire way that I'll end up in some dirty hospital with hallways filled with locals and wait in line for hours.
I was wrong on two counts - it was clean and I got right in. (And I felt sorry and a bit ashamed that lots of locals were left sitting on the benches).
Had several x-rays, a shot, stitches and medicine. The bill came to less than $20. (I think I payed a couple hundred for my insurance!)
I love the copy on their website. We invite you to learn about the story behind China Connection and why we are different from other "Medical Tourism" companies .
How desperate do you have to be?
