Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minnesota) thinks with some new legislation and focus on increasing our energy production drivers could be paying $2 a gallon for gasoline in the future.
Bachman said Congress could make that happen. She said legislation aimed at reducing gas prices and opening up the nation's known petroleum and natural gas reserves could help lower gas prices.
Bachmann said it is a question of supply and demand and said now that gas has reached $4.00 per gallon it is time for Congress to act.
Rep. Bachman said that if the U.S. were to open up reserves it would send a signal to markets that we are serious about increasing supplies which would prompt prices to start going down. In addition, Bachmann said the United States also could supplement new drilling by building more refineries and nuclear power plants and by extending tax incentives for alternative energy sources such as wind.
One notation from an outside observer is that since Americans have become more angered over the increasing price of gasoline, and have been vocal on a plan such as Bachman is proposing, OPEC is already meeting to increase their oil production by 200,000 barrels per day. Apparently OPEC realizes their financial loss if the United States were to get aggressive on being oil and energy independent.
Elwyn Tinklenberg, a Democrat who is challenging Bachmann for the the 6th District seat in Congress, said Bachmann is offering a simplistic view.
Rep. Michele Bachmann — must remember that name!
He can, and should!
I think by reserves she means to start drilling in those areas that have been put off-limits. Notice she says “known natural gas and petroleum reserves”- in other words not the stuff already in tanks. At least that is how I understood it...
Either he and a sizable portion of congress have been bought off by OPEC etc, OR we as a nation are being blackmailed to remain dependent on foreign oil. But Bush has been a failure on of the highest order on foreign trade. His most preferred trading partners are among the ones giving us the most problems. He demands nothing of Mexico to stop illegals. He says nothing to China when they send tainted goods here. Not that McCain or Obama will be an improvement but rather they likely work for the same owners also.

Elwyn Tinklenberg ... ?
“Depleting the Strategic Oil Preserve would supply about five minutes worth of total US consumption.”
The article is not about the SPR, Did you read it before posting?
By the way it there is no such thing as the Strategic Oil Preserve. LOL
“why cant Bush do the opposite with ANWR and elsewhere?”
Mr Bush does not have the balls.
“I can’t believe how many people on this thread are confusing this with the SPR.”
LOL.
I can.
LOL
Rep. Bachman’s definitely on the right track.
One market problem with outer continental shelf drilling I haven’t seen addressed is where the rigs will come from. Right now, virtually every deep water drill rig that exists or is under construction is under contact for years. And if you ordered a new one today it might be completed sometime in 2012.
By fighting and delaying this for years, the democrats have put the US in a tough position. Since Brazil’s Petrobras discovered big offshore oilfields last fall, they’ve been busy signing contracts on rigs and currently have something like 80% of the world’s deepwater fleet locked up for years.
Getting congress out of the way of offshore drilling is a critical first step and needs to be done now so the plans for oil exploration and development can be put in place. But the ‘now’ part of ‘drill here, drill now’ really means plan to drill now, maybe get some rigs exploring in five or six years for the continental shelf resources, then they need to get the fields producing.
America can thank the democrats and their enviro-whacko friends for letting Brazil get in front of us in offshore oilfield development. I’m sure Petrobras is grateful.
They can thank the corrupt GOP ones just as much. This is far more than a DEM vs GOP problem. This is corruption that's rampant in both parties which is holding us down. Nobody calls their hand. Gore the enviro whacko has mines on his property in Tennessee. And let's not forget it was Jeb Bush who was against drilling off the coast Florida. If good ole Jeb had ran for POTUS everybody would be singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" in the party just like they are with No Drill McCain.
Rep Bachman does seem to be untainted by the Main Stream DC payola for market favors lobbyist.
Elwyn is such a macho name, no ? You can just feel the power. Tinklenberg. There's another. Yes, indeed. Tinklenberg. Sounds like what a six year old would say when he has to go drain the lizard. I gotta go Tinklenberg, daddy.
From the article I was not sure if she was talking about the Strategic Petroleum Reserve or the vast quantities of oil and gas that are currently off limits to drilling. It makes a big difference. Both could be referred to generically as “reserves”.
I don’t think you read that right. No mention of the Strategic Petroleum Reserves.
roflol.

Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best ones, dummy.
Throw in a free 8 oz anodized aluminum water tumbler in one of 6 colors, with every fill up (min 10 gallon purchase) (collect them all!) and I'm in!
