HAVANA, Cuba (AP) -- The Cuban boy at the center of an international custody battle eight years ago has joined Cuba's Young Communist Union.
Elian Gonzalez said he will never let down ex-President Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro, according to the Communist youth newspaper Juventud Rebelde.
Raul Castro succeeded Fidel as president earlier this year.
Now 14, Elian was 6 when his relatives in Miami, Florida, lost their fight to keep him in the United States and he was returned to Cuba in mid-2000 with his father.
Elian had survived a boating accident off the Florida coast that killed his mother, who was attempting to get to the U.S.
Juventud Rebelde says in its Sunday edition that the boy was among 18,000 people who joined the group Saturday.

There is a law exclusive to Cubans fleeing the Castro regime. The Cubans who risk their lives for that escape face enormous risk not only at sea, but in being returned if they cannot reach US soil.
If they are caught at sea, even feet of the US coast, they are returned to a fate none of us want to contemplate. Before Clinton caved to Castro in 1995, those who had taken that perilous journey and came close to our shores were not repatriated.
They are not pieces of garbage that washed on shore. More than most native-born Americans, Cubans who escaped the communist tyrant appreciate the freedom this country offers.
He argued as do I for the father's right and responsibility. The owner didn't seem to take part and let many threads fly. The number of people taking the father's side eventually diminished. I think one time hubby was warned for make fun of the "memorial" threads. He called it the Elian cult.
One night on an Elian thread someone cussed my guy out in Spanish and insulted the war dead in our family. He went off and got a suspension. I read over his shoulder since 98 and when I retired, I decided to log-in and speak-up.
bigsigh? after multiple bans and aliases, I put him back to work. LoL! He tries to tell me what to post, but after 35 years he can't tell me much.
The difference with Elian is that he was a young child with a surviving parent.
Wow, the number of totalitarian supporters on this board are shocking. If you can’t distinguish between Mexicans (free) and Cubans (slave), I don’t know what to tell you.
The atmosphere was ugly. Much like the pig-ignorance and lies we see from the Fidelistas in this thread.
Could you list the totalitarian supporters on the thread so that we can submit them to the public ridicule they so richly deserve?
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. One communist pig replaces another.
Yes, you can go to Cuba. Stay as long as you like, take purplepuke with you. :-)
If I had a choice between living with you and taking the next flight, I’d be at the airport very fast.
Go to your room and no supper. Toodles!
AMs, you need to be aware this poster is acknowledging he/she has been banned and is trying to cause more trouble again reigniting old and ugly divisive flamewars under a new account spewing pro-Fidel/Cuban Government propaganda.
All Cuban children should be forcibly liberated from Communist Cuban bondage. So should their parents. If their parents are communists, they should not just lose their children, they should also die.
I never started any flame war. I told you about my husband. I never hit the abuse button when you called me all the names. I have not poste don Elian until today. So let the moderator be the judge.
I think we’re about 48 years too late on Cuba.
Cuba Libre!
Excuse me, but you are an ignorant idiot
The brother can’t hang on much longer. I wonder if the people will take to the streets like we saw in Europe and some Asian countries like the Philippines?
Some people are just plain ignorant
You are excused.
Feel free to continue supporting border hopping communists.
