Chris Matthews and Tim Russert: Crass versus Class
American Thinker ^ | 6/14/08 | Richard Baehr

Posted on 06/14/2008 7:41:40 PM PDT by Dawnsblood

Among all the tributes offered Friday night on the various cable networks to Tim Russert, only one that I saw managed to use the opportunity to crassly advance a political perspective and advance a personal political ambition. Chris Matthews is salivating at the chance to run for US Senator in 2010 against Arlen Spector in Pennsylvania. He has made no secret of this.

Friday night, MSNBC caught up with Matthews in Paris, where he was vacationing. Asked about his memories of Russert, Matthews had only one story to tell -- about how on the eve of the Iraq war, he ran into Russert and asked him why he was supporting the war, which Matthews opposed. Matthews stated that Russert told him that the possibility Iraq had a nuclear bomb program was enough reason.

As Matthews described it, Tim Russert was the representative for many average Americans, and if "they" could fool him (Russert), "they" could fool a nation. Obviously, Matthews was too sophisticated to be in the "everyman" category like Russert, and so harbored no fears about Iraq and WMD. Matthews went on to throw in that "they" meant the neocons, of course, once more smearing those Jewish advisors to President Bush (Doug Feith, Paul Wolfowitz and company), who Matthews has been blaming for the war for six years.

Mathews has been an ardent supporter of Barack Obama, who "sent a thrill up [Mathews'] leg" this year with his speaking prowess. Mathews seems to think that, like Obama, his early opposition to the Iraq war is an issue that may have the legs to take him to the US Senate.

It is regrettable, and pitiful, really, to see Matthews use the sudden death of an obviously likable, warm, and generous man, and one far more capable and successful than Matthews at his job, to create a sound bite on a big audience night for cable news networks. Rather than pay tribute to Russert, Matthews' comments were designed primarily to push his own political ambitions forward. But then again, this is Chris Matthews, so why should we expect more?

The Democrats already have one clown (Al Franken) running for the Senate in Minnesota this year. It looks like they may have another in 2010 in Pennsylvania.

Chris is another one who looks like his blood pressure’s off the charts.

Hope he has a good doc.

I wonder if Chris has ever noted the fact that Libya gave up its nuclear ambitions and plans almost immediately after Saddam Husein was captured in his rat hole. Those nuclear ambitions helped lead to the break up of the “A-Q Kahn” network (sp????) that was a huge threat to allow nucs into the hands of terrorists or terrorist sponsoring states like Libya.

This point ALONE is justification enough for the invasion of Iraq — unfortunately, the Bush Administration has allowed this fact to go down the memory hole controlled by the mainstream media and Democrats.

I heard one report yesterday that mentioned that Russert was diabetic. No one mentioned high blood pressure, but I’d bet for it before I’d bet against it.

Many Peace Corps alumni, like Mr. Matthews, are, how shall we say? “Light in the loafers.” Now, Chris may be the exception, but somehow, I doubt it.

Chris Matthews and Tim Russert have a lot of physical simalarities. Chris needs to keep in touch with his doctor.

I am certainly unaware that Russert ever publicly stated he was in support of military action in 2003. Beside the point of the crassness of Matthews comments, his willingness to use a supposed private conversation (what is essentially hearsay) to forward his agenda is beyond belief.

Despicable.

Matthews is a punk and a scumbag.
Russert seemed generally liberal but was pretty scrupulous about giving every politician and public official a good grilling. He was nothing if not competent is his research.
Matthews is in a class with Keith Olbermann,a similarly lowlife crap thrower.
I recall Rush Limbaugh, who probably shared few political preferences with Russert speak well of him in terms of his evenhandedness.
It’s a shame Russert won’t be around to moderate any McCain-Obama debates, because most media people will kiss Obama’s ass.

A guy from CNN tonite said he used to be at MSNBC, wasn’t good, intemidated by having to brief Matthews, Brokaw and Brian Williams and Tim Russert. He said they all conveyed to him that he was Awful..... EXCEPT for Tim, who gave him encouragement.......Class vs. CRASS TRASH.

Tim was a nice guy, no doubt, but I hear all this jazz about him being a "tough questioner."

Since Clinton, what was the toughest question he ever asked a Democrat? I don't recall any "tough questions."

I wonder if we can ask the Big Guy for a recount? Maybe it was really Sissy’s time to go home?

Nah, you know how that works. He picks the good ones, and we get to keep the rejects and "utility players to be named later".

Requiescat in pace Tim Russert. Especially a man who, in the glare of immense success, took time to write a book about his daddy, a Buffalo, N.Y., trash collector.

Now his dad will have to bury him.

At least the old man lived long enough to see his son get an impossible interview with Pope John Paul II and sizzle the mighty and the merely pretentious on his griddle.

I think Charlie Rose and Mike Wallace are about the only other guys around who'd do that. Maybe Connie Chung. I can't think of any of the women reporters or interviewers. They're soft, easily put off or distracted, and, as in Barbara Walters's case, mostly out for the money reaction shot -- tears, rage, rising smoke, whatever. Maury Povich and Jerry Springer tearjerkathon material for people who don't like fisticuffs and bouncers in black.

If I recall correctly, Matthews was longtime chief of staff to House Speaker Tip O'Neill.

There's your balanced and fair POV for you.
