John McCain: The Conservative Choice
GOPublius ^ | June 14, 2008 | GOPublius

Like Davey Crocket and company at the Alamo, there are a number of steadfast conservatives who are holding out against John McCain, even in the face of what amounts to unvarnished socialism in the person of Barack Obama. Most of these individuals are committed, principled, conservatives, which means their allegiance to the Republican Party depends on the frequency and degree with which the Republican Party faithfully, fully, resolutely and competently fosters conservative ideals of governance.

Quite simply, John McCain isn’t their man. Far more the maverick, compromising, bipartisan, sometimes-conservative, McCain has repeatedly raised the ire of conservatives not for his lack of principle, but for positions that stand in opposition to their principles. It is an honest, straightforward disagreement about policy and governance, the true nature of conservatism, and what is best for America.

There can be no doubt that these conservatives love their country, perhaps more than many. Oddly enough however, some of these conservatives have adopted a scorched-America, Phoenix policy. That is to say, they would rather sit home on Election Day, write in a non-competitive candidate, or even vote for Barack Obama, over John McCain. Their strategy, or so they hope, is to so damage America through four years of unchecked liberalism under an Obama Administration and Democratic congress, that like the mythical Phoenix, true conservatism will spring from the ashes such as in 1980.

It’s not an incoherent position, but it’s not a wise one either.

First off, there are a number of logical inconsistencies with this concept, and one large assumption. The first is the notion that an Obama presidency will necessarily be a disaster. What if its not? What if, like Bill Clinton’s presidency, Obama’s first two shaky years in office are met with a GOP midterm victory,

Bingo. Stupid energy and immigration policies will give the WH to BO (or maybe the krintons still have a round or two left?).

Are you suggesting Osama will give us the desired energy and immigration policies?

No.

I am stating that McCain’s stupid policies will alienate enough of the conservative base that BO’s coalition will carry the day. There is NO percentage in playing to the left in any realm. McCain is pulling into his last station and just may kill the nation he once so honorably served.

Both men will likely be unmittigated disasters for this nation. In the end does it really matter who destroys us?

I work with a guy who is one of these “conservatives” that you speak of and the more I speak to him about this, the more I realize that he is not the person that I thought he was. I hate to look down on someone but I cannot look at this individual in the same light anymore. I no longer entertain his diatribes about the same tired old BS about McCain because he is a lost cause.

Sad, isn't it?

What you all seem to be missing is the fact that we have a Liberal Senate Majority Leader and a FLAMING Liberal speaker of the House and Republicans are poised to lose more seats this election. So yes, it does matter what poison you pick. Obama couldn't destroy this nation by himself but given what I have outlined above, it is very probable. All things considered, I feel much better with McCain in office calling the shots while we have troops down range, than Obama. If you feel comfortable with Obama making those decisions, so be it, but I choose to have someone that at least knows which hand goes across his heart during the pledge not mention how to effectively employ our men and women in uniform.

>>”...NOT voting, voting 3rd party, or DIRECT nomination) a man who is as vile a human being as BO, JUST to “punish” republicans is patently absurd...”<<

If not now...when? The next election? The next? No, the RINO Juan McCain will not get my vote. At least Obama comes right out and says he’s a Socialist and a Liberal. McCain tries to hide it as he claims “I’m a Republican”.

Sorry, Juan, looks like both you and America will lose this one. And it won’t be because of Conservatives who are tired of being taken for granted stayed home or voted third party, so don’t flame me with that tired and cliche’d argument.

This election will not be about the troops, the war on “terror” or the war in Iraq. It will be about domestic issues. There is not a dimes worth of difference between the two socialists on domestic issues. Is Obama worse? Possibly but tell me how one can be “not as bad” a socialist as the other guy. That is like being “a little bit” pregnant.

“If not now...when? The next election? The next?”

Exactly. These party first people always tell you, “wait until the next election,” show your disgust then. Of course that admonishment holds until the following election cycle when they have to drag it out and dust it off again, because “our socialist doesn’t suck as bad as theirs.”

It seems to me you are trying to shape this discussion in more favorable terms for your stance, because having BO as “Commander and Chief” doesn't sound too palatable. So, if you had to choose the Commander and Chief, you are saying that in your experience that there would be little difference between BO and John McCain?

Once again, THIS ELECTION IS NOT GOING TO BE DECIDED ON SECURITY ISSUES.

Gas Prices, Oil Prices, Economy and Jobs are going to be the top issues for voting Americans this year. Believe it or not, not everyone views politics through the prism of the war in Iraq.

The Presidency is about far more than just the C in C. It just is. Maybe you are military, if so God bless you. Most of America ISN’T. Trust me when I say this; this election will go to the first man to adamantly push for drilling in the U.S. Energy, economy, not war is going to be the deciding factor.

McCain’s no prize, and he’s not a conservative. But he’s not a socialist. He’s a moderate.

Obama, OTOH, is a Marxist, and anyone who willfully allows a Marxist to become commander in chief is no conservative. I can remember when conservatives believed that Marxists and what Lenin called their “useful idiots” were traitors.

How times have chnaged...

“McCain’s no prize, and he’s not a conservative. But he’s not a socialist.”

God it has to absolutely SUCK to have to defend that POS when he keeps doing this s**t to ya;

“I am very angry, frankly, at the oil companies,” said the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. “Not only because of the obscene profits they’ve made, but their failure to invest in alternative energy to help us eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.”

McCain also wants a “thorough and complete investigation of [oil] speculators.”

Have a nice evening.

John Backstab McCain doesnt need our vote till the last minute. Dont feed his arrogance.

He needs to understand its by the skin of his lieing teeth and not by overwhelming support of conservatives.

The Presidency is about far more than drilling for oil as well. The last time I checked, Commander and Chief was still a very intrigual part of the job description for President of the free world. As a side note, I haven’t noticed Obama pushing for drilling in the Prudhoe Bay for the matter. You still have not answered my question and I take your silence as consent that you would have no issue with Obama as Commander in Chief.
