'NYT' Sunday Preview: Gore Vidal Questions McCain's Time in Prison Camp (He made it up?)
New York Times ^ | June 12, 2008 | Greg Mitchell

Posted on 06/14/2008 8:18:28 AM PDT by tlb

NEW YORK In an interview for this Sunday's edition of The New York Times Magazine, famed novelist/essayist Gore Vidal appears to question Sen. John McCain's account of being imprisoned by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war.

Asked what he thinks of McCain, Vidal calls him a "disaster," then tells Deborah Solomon, "Who started this rumor that he was a war hero? Where does that come from, aside from himself? About his suffering in the prison war camp?"

Solomon replies: "Everyone knows he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam." To which Vidal responds: "That’s what he tells us."

Why would you doubt him? Solomon wonders. "He’s a graduate of Annapolis," Vidal explains. "I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there."

Asked how he felt when he heard about the passing earlier this year of his conservative nemesis, William F. Buckley, Vidal says, "I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred."

“Asked how he felt when he heard about the passing earlier this year of his conservative nemesis, William F. Buckley, Vidal says, “I thought hell is bound to be a livelier place, as he joins forever those whom he served in life, applauding their prejudices and fanning their hatred.”

Mr. Vidal’s words may indeed haunt him for eternity. It is my belief that there are many in hell who rejected the Savior for sexual sins. I pray that he may repent before he dies.

At this point, I might unfortunately have to agree with the old chanker...

“Gore Vidal Questions McCain’s Time in Prison Camp (He made it up?)”

I dislike Juanito intensely but my Dad served in Vietnam and the first person that questions his service (to my face) will immediately afterward experience a significant, life-changing, emotional and physical event.

Vidal is a step-brother of Jackie Onassis, but by marriage.

There's a certain percentage of the lumpen masses that don't know of Gore's true sexual orientation.....probably the same percentage who are unaware of Obama's true religious orientation.

Nothing worse that an old homo bitterly clinging on to a foul mouth.

It was the second reading of this that made me appreciate it.

When this bugger dies (Vidal), it might be good for the Mods to lock out comments.

Unofficially speaking, after this revolting display, some of us just might call in sick.

He was a once only a fringe figure, despite his strong Democrat party ties and his cousins Jimmy Carter and Al Gore.

As the party moves farther left, Vidal seems more mainstream than ever. He would be perfectly at home on MSNBC or preaching at Obama’s church, wouldn’t he?

“....and calls Italo Calvino the greatest writer in his lifetime while dissing Norman Mailer and Philip Roth.”

Mailer died last November and so is finally unable to get drunk and kick Vidal’s ass for this.

"He’s a graduate of Annapolis," Vidal explains. "I know a lot of the Annapolis breed. Remember, I’m West Point, where I was born. My father went there."

In my admittedly brief search of a biography of this painted turd, the closest he ever was to being "West Point" was being born in the West Point Cadet Hospital. Sneaky little bastard trying to polish himself up to the point of being a graduate of a US Military Academy, all to smear the reputation of one who did.

I'm not someone who likes, or would normally vote for McCain. I have NO respect for what he's done as a politician. But the thought that people - no that's far too generous a term - will use their freedom of speech to try to minimize the suffering and sacrifice that he went through in the hell-holes of enemy POW camps - Remember, to a-holes like Vidal, the US was "the bad guys" during Viet Nam, and they will never forget that our fighting men deserved everything they got, and they should have gotten far worse...

I'm not one prone to outright hatred, but Vidal's REALLY pushing me in that direction. This guy's in desperate need for a serious ass-kicking!

Mark

I guess it’s too late to tell Vidal to “Grow up!”, isn’t it?

“Drop dead!” will suit just fine...
