I was flipping around the dial, trying to find something besides the Russert story, when I cam across olbermann on MSNBC. Just from his attitude, Olbermann already seems to think he has just been crowned king of NBC News. Since Russert was the only even partially honest reporter they had, NBC News has just died.

Sitting on long flights can lead to blood clots in the legs.

Also a possible cause of freeper Michigander's death this week. He was quite young as well, 47 IIRC.

Very sad news. Russert never seemed to let his political leanings get in the way of doing his job, such a rarity in the media.

Oh no! Prayers for his family. Such a tragic thing to deal with.

Mr. Silverback, I’ll also say a prayer for your family and for your Aunt’s recovery.

The other scary part of this is now being in my 50’s, I hate seeing all these people dying in their 50’s. It just hits too close to home.

When you see younger people than you dying, it does tend to have an impact.

I was absolutely stunned to hear this tragic news. Timmy was truly a decent man, and he was the best at what he did. I will miss him.

RIP, Timmy, and prayers up for your family.

If deep vein thrombosis from his recent flight was what did it, let’s get some kind of major prevention or treatment for it going. What a shame for us all, what a loss for America. He was a Democrat but a very good one.

RUSH: And I've read the book, and you tell a story about you went back home after achieving a level-of-success and you wanted to buy your dad a car.

RUSSERT: (Laughing.) It was my dad's 75th birthday, Rush, and I sent Big Russ a catalog, a Lexis catalog a Mercedes catalog and a Cadillac catalog, and, "Dad, as you would say, 'top shelf.' You've never had a new car. You always had used cars, or I guess they call them 'pre-owned' now," and I flew home to Buffalo for Thanksgiving, and I said, "Well, let's go get it." He said, "Get in the car. Let's go." He drove two blocks, and all of a sudden we pulled in the driveway and there's a big sign, Jack Atkins Ford. I said, "What is this?" and a guy appeared in the doorway in a Buffalo Bills wind breaker. He said, "There's Charlie. Hey, Charlie, here's the kid. Show him the car." We walked into the showroom, and there it is, a black Ford Crown Victoria. I said, "Dad, it's a cop car," and Big Russ said, "Charlie, show him that truck. Look at that. You can put a case of beer and a suitcase in there. Charlie show him the spare. That's not a doughnut. That's a real spare." So we bought the car, and we were driving home and I said, "Dad, I have to ask you. You could have had a Lexus a or a Mercedes. Why a Crown Vic?" He pulled over the side of the road and put the car in park, which is a big deal for Big Russ to stop driving. He said, "I beat those guys in the war. I don't want a Lexus or a Mercedes." I said, "Oh. Ok. How about a Cadillac?" He said, "You want me to drive home to our neighborhood, big spanking new Cadillac, and the neighbors say, 'Ah, Big Russ's kid made it on NBC and now he's showing off.'" He said, "That's not who I am. I'm a Ford Crown Vic guy." Even in receiving a gift, Rush, he was teaching me a lesson.

RUSH: Well, the reason that story resonated, and I don't mean to intrude on your story, but something similar happened to me. When I could finally do it, I bought my mom and dad a new car. They wanted a Ford Taurus --

RUSSERT: (Laughing) You're kidding?

RUSH -- and so I got 'em one. It was the happiest day of their lives. They could never believe anybody would do something like this, and later on I wanted to get my mom a bigger car, and I tried to get her a Lincoln Town Car, and I did. I insisted on it for safety. She didn't want it. She wanted a Taurus for much the same kind of reasons that you've described with your father here. You know, they were a unique generation of people. They had to grow up a lot sooner than their kids did and they had to learn there were things bigger than themselves a lot sooner that I did or most of my generation did. I actually studied and paid attention to them as they were bringing me up in case I ever had to do it myself. (cont.)

I know some of the pain this family is feeling. My uncle suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 54 on Sunday, and died from injuries in a car accident that resulted from it. My aunt was also badly injured, with 12 broken ribs and internal damage. Fortunately, she is trying her best to fight on.

They're in my prayers, FRiend.

I hate to say it, but now NBC has even less credibility.>>>

The thought that has been going through my mind over the last 2 hours. Incredibly sad to lose him like this. My money is going on blood clot from his long airplane ride from Rome.

Oh, well then you must be better than me.

Nope.

Not at all my FRiend, it wasn't my intent to convey such a reactive attitude.

Thanks for that link. Russert always came across to me as one of those guys who was impossible to dislike.

Heck -- He went through that entire video clip without losing the smile on his face . . . and that's always how I'll remember him on the air.

"The really scary thing is that we don’t often know what is taking place inside of our bodies. Even though he wasn’t that overweight, he likely had coronary artery disease, the most common reason for heart attacks."

Likely the long plane flight home from Italy produced a deep-vein clot that broke off 12 hours later and sealed his fate.

Yeah, I am sure literally half the United States would be cheering in the streets if this was Rush Limbaugh instead of Mr. Russert.

Democrats show no such weakness for their enemies.

Democrats (including Bill Clinton) used Sen. Paul Wellstone funeral pulpit and Coretta Scott King’s funeral to attack Republicans, they show no compulsion for feelings. Look at the venom spewed by the left and the MSM when President Reagan died.

Scary....he was not that overweight.

You are correct. Plus he seemed like a healthy kind of overweight or chubbiness. He seemed vigorous and as sharp as ever

Some reports say he was diabetic. Maybe that impacts on heart conditions

Bring back Roger Mudd!

Ha, ha! Definitely! My brother was up visiting a couple of weeks back and we were just talking about Roger Mudd. We had been looking at some old coverage of the hotel fire in the 80's in Las Vegas--bro had just come back from Vegas so that's how we got on the subject. He commented that you aren't going to have any scandals with a Roger Mudd! He's still around too. We looked him on on Wiki.
