United States Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) released the following statement today after the Supreme Court ruled that detainees held at Guantanamo Bay have the right to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts.
“The Supreme Court today has reminded this Administration and its Congressional supporters that the fundamental precepts of liberty must be respected even as we work to protect our nation. Giving the detainees at Guantanamo the right to challenge their detention in court is basic to any system of justice. Today's Supreme Court decision again rejects policies of this Administration that are inconsistent with our Constitution.”
Durbin is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Chairman of its Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law.
Durbin sounds like he is anticipating the Gitmo detainees are about ready to immigrate and apply for citizenship in his state.
What a cracker jack!
Now we are asked to put our liberty and safety at risk by handing their fates over to judges none of us trust who may put them on the street to harm us.
The USSC has gone nuts. Dick Durbin has been nuts a very long time.
I don’t know if you can call Durbin and the Democrats stupid in supporting this decision, it comports with their interests. They want Iraq back on the front page with a lot of casualties and deaths in order to advance their political fortunes. Letting terrorists know they have nothing to fear by being captured will embolden them to fight and expand the severity of the war; more American deaths, more coverage, more votes for democrats, that’s evil not stupid.
Is there any doubt left that this government is irrevocably broken??
Supreme Court Justices should be appointed on the basis of their knowledge of law and the ability to interpret law based on the Constitution. Congress and the president ‘du jour’ have made them political appointees who espouse a particular political view, NOT unbiased jurists.
We deserve better. When are we going to demand it??
NOTE TO DURBIN - What part of the fact that the people currently in Guantanamo Bay despise us for our freedoms and only want to kill us don’t you understand? What part of the fact that many of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners of war who were released to their “home” countries, returned to the battlefield to try to kill more Americans don’t you understand?? In fact, what part of the fact that you were elected BY Americans to REPRESENT Americans and PROTECT Americans in accordance with the Constitution don’t you understand?? In fact, when is Congress going to stop selling America out and start applying the freedoms, rights and principles to America and NOT to our sworn enemy??

So, Dick, then Truman should have brought Hermann Goering and the other Nazi’s to the United States for trial, right? Oh, I forgot, the Democratic party wasn’t run by morons back then. Then they knew that the enemy wasn’t entitled to constitutional rights, but today we believe that liberty demands that KSM have more rights than our soldiers in the field. Utterly unbelievable.
I would hope that our American military becomes a whole lot less interested in taking prisoners or allowing the vanquished to achieve prisoner status in the future....
Let our less squeamish allies take, interrogate and “deal with” the “prisoners”...

No, Turban Durbin. The Supreme Court dictated a new right to illegal combatants captured on foreign battlefields and not even detained in territory under jurisdiction of the courts of the United States. This is a military matter which is not within the jurisdiction of the supreme court.
Five justices have committed treason by wanton interference and sabatoge of the country while it is at war. This is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. At minimum, all five should be impeached, imprisoned for the duration of the war and be declared unfit to hold any office of public trust for the rest of their lives. At maximum, all five should be tried, convicted and hanged. I would personally consider it an honor to be asked to spring the trap door on them.
Dear Mr. Durbin,
The “detainees” that you are defending should be released into your backyard.
Durbin has a voter registration team on their way to Gitmo as we speak.

How is allowing them access to US Courts where classified info can be revealed and where non-US Citizens have the same US rights protecting our nation? This guy is as dumb as a box of rocks.
