Federal registry proposed for recreational fishing in federal waters

The government wants to know who's fishing for fun in federal ocean waters.

Recreational anglers and spearfishers would be required to be registered...

NOAA's Fisheries Service said it wants to get more accurate data on recreational fish catches. Commercial fishers already need licenses or permits and thus would not have to register again...

The registry ...fishing anywhere for what are called anadromous species, such as striped bass, salmon and shad, that spawn in rivers and streams and spend their adult lives in estuaries and the ocean.

Registrations will include an angler's name, address, telephone number and the regions where fishing is conducted.

These people will soon want a federal registry for how often we mop our bathroom floors, use our toasters, etc...

Hawaii and the states from New Jersey to Maine do not offer such licenses, NOAA said.

The agency hopes the federal program will encourage those states to start their own licensing programs.

I'm sure Golden Eagle will have no problem with this, right? If you're not doing anything illegal, what's the problem?

The state has been trying to get this for a while now but everybody knows that it’s just a lead program for fishing licenses and fees. As it is, there’s no license required to fish in the ocean but the state is trying to change that.

Huh? Those are public waters, not private, so I think they should be open. My position is protection of PRIVATE property, hence you need the owner’s permission if you want to fish their privately owned lake. So you don’t agree with me, you must think you should be able to trespass freely on other people’s property?

That's exactly what it's leading to. From the article....

NOAA said registration would be free the first two years and an annual fee ranging from $15 to $25 would be imposed starting in 2011.

Those under age 16 would be exempt and fees would be waived for indigenous people, such as members of federally recognized tribes.

I heard this again on the morning news, turned it up so that my foreman could hear it too. We’d talked about the state licensing shore fishing before and he said it will never happen. Hearing this news this morning, said he’ll go fishing with his rifle.

Just wait. No fishing for Salmon this year is just a start of the draconian regulations. All fish will become endangered species.
