"A quarter of a century after the outbreak of Aids, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has accepted that the threat of a global heterosexual pandemic has disappeared," reports the Independent, a leftist London daily:
In the first official admission that the universal prevention strategy promoted by the major Aids organisations may have been misdirected, Kevin de Cock, the head of the WHO's department of HIV/Aids said there will be no generalised epidemic of Aids in the heterosexual population outside Africa.

None of this is to gainsay concern over AIDS in Africa, which is a genuine catastrophe. But the dire warnings of the 1980s that everyone was at risk from AIDS turned out to be false. Those warnings made for more gripping journalism, of course, and they also served certain ideological interests. Social conservatives, who believed sex outside marriage was wrong, were able to argue that it was dangerous as well. (To be fair, it is, but not nearly as much so as the late-'80s AIDS reportage would have had us believe.)
Gay-rights advocates, meanwhile, overcame a huge threat to their cause. Without the heterosexual AIDS scare, it is unlikely that homosexuality would have achieved the degree of public acceptance it has since the 1980s. Indeed, gays might have found themselves abandoned by liberals, who today tend to value hygiene over individual freedom (and if you don't believe us, try walking into a gay bar in New York City and lighting a cigarette).

Actually the AIDS hysteria was a rare instance of both left- and right- wing ideologues fanning the same flames. The left wanted unlimited amounts of money diverted to extremely promiscuous gay men and to drug addicts, while the religious right wanted to scare everybody into adhering to their no-sex-outside-marriage beliefs. Both groups eagerly exaggerated the risks of AIDS transmission to further their own political agendas. Dishonesty is bad, no matter what political corner it’s coming from.
Remember when Oprah said “one-in-five heterosexuals could be dead from AIDS” by 1990?

In the “Politically Incorrect Guide to Science” The author, Tom Bethell makes some interesting observations regarding the African Aids epidemic. It seem that the HIV virus does NOT have to be present to issue a diagnosis of AIDS. There only needs to be a set of symptoms: weight loss, lethargy, etc. Many of these symptoms are also signs of malaria and other tropical diseases. Remember when 1/4 of the African population was going to die as a result of the massive AIDS epidemic? According to the author of the PIGtS, African population has increased since those dire predictions were made

One of the big reasons for the spread of HIV in Africa is the horrifically high percentages of other, untreated venereal diseases.
It is not uncommon to have multiple chancres and sores on the genitalia, and multiple chronic infections also make it much easier to catch the disease.
Then, of course, there are grotesque cultural beliefs, such as the way to cure AIDS is to have unprotected sex with a virgin, usually a preteen.
Oh man, now they've done it. Liberal heads are going to roll over this little slip of sanity by some poor doomed soles at the WHO. Once the Homosexual Lobby gets done with them they'll wish that THEY had terminal AIDS and soon to be lose of this veil of tears that we call reality. :-)
