Actor Omar Sharif Says Arab Nations Will Never Be Democratized

Egyptian actor Omar Sharif — best known for his film roles in Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago — reportedly blasted U.S. policy in Iraq and said Americans are ignorant.

According to The Middle East Media Research Institute, Sharif said the "East" will never have a democracy because people like him "prefer to go to the neighborhood sheik." MEMRI —a Middle Eastern press monitoring organization — posted an interview of Sharif that aired on the Al-Hayat TV network.

"I lived in America for a long time. Only 10% of all Americans have a passport. In other words, 90% never left America," said Sharif. "They don't know anything."

Sharif said that he spoke with President Bush before the beginning of the Iraq War and told him that Arab nations are made up of sects resistant to becoming democratized.

"I said to Bush, even before he entered Iraq: Forget about all that. We, the Arabs... We are not like [regular countries]," said Sharif. "You will drown there.

After being asked what Bush's response was, the actor stated: "He didn't believe me."

“In other words, 90% never left America,” said Sharif. “They don't know anything.””

That shows how stupid he is. No one has ever left the planet earth yet we know tons about the universe.

That's not an absolute. Passports would be needed to enter Burma as one example.

Another example might be a man I really like as an actor, Daniel Day-Lewis. He has a reputation for getting so into his characters that he scares people.

When I heard his spare time is spent in making custom shoes it made me think of Dr. Manette in Tale of Two Cities.

It could be D Day Lewis got into the hobby of custom shoe-making subconsciously as a result of his breakout hit “My Left Foot”, about Irish writer Christy Brown, whose left foot became his writing “hand”... Reminds me of an roommate of mine in the 70s, who had a number of guitars, played quite well, and liked to spent some time redoing the finishes on his cheaper acoustic guitars; over a period of a week or so, I saw him starting to brush and spray a royal blue finish on one of them, and at a certain point he stopped and said “Why am I doing this?”
I said “I know why-—Wallace Stevens”. He looked thunderstruck, since Stevens was his favorite poet, and the Blue Guitar poem I’m sure a poem he was aware of. He spent the next 5 minutes letting this revelation sink in.

Only 10% of all Americans have a passport. In other words, 90% never left America

Non sequitur -- he should stick to acting. Punditry is beyond him:

1. You don't (well, didn't) need a passport to "leave" (and re-enter) the country. I lived one summer in Mexico long before I got my first passport.

2. Because you don't have a passport now doesn't mean you never had one. My MIL doesn't have a passport now despite having lived a quarter-century in various European cities, Saudi Arabia, Iran and Singapore.

Calling Omar Sharif an “acting great” is a large overstatement: he was in one great movie, DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, in a foolproof part, and was memorable in LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, playing a character who, as it now seems, reading this and seeing that he converted to Islam at 24, 10 years before L. of A., was pretty much himself. I can still see him screaming at T.E. Lawrence, (O’Toole)-—”ENGLISH BLASPHEMER!!!

But his best movie of all was "Top Secret!"

"Here, you dropped your phony dog poop."
"What phony dog poop?"

“an interview of Sharif that aired on the Al-Hayat TV network.”
So he was asked to do an interview. He was asked questions by the interviewer. He answered, giving his own opinions. I disagree with his points of view, but he didn’t do anything remotely as obnoxious as the dixie twits. People disagree, okay,,,,,,, he didn’t go out of his way to make political points as do sean penn, susan sarandon, etc..
