World Health Organization Admits Threat of Global AIDS Epidemic Is Over
Fox News / The Independent (U.K.) ^ | June 8, 2008

Posted on 06/08/2008 8:08:28 AM PDT by Stoat

The head of the World Health Organization’s HIV/AIDS department has officially admitted for the first time that there will be no global epidemic of the disease among the heterosexual population outside Africa, The Independent reported.

Kevin de Cock said global prevention strategies to address AIDS as a risk to all populations, among the WHO and major AIDS organizations, may have been misdirected. It is now recognized that, with the exception of sub-Saharan African, it is confined to high-risk groups.

These groups include men who have sex with other men, drug users who inject with needles, and sex workers and their clients, The Independent reported.

“It is very unlikely there will be a heterosexual epidemic in other countries,” de Cock is quoted in The Independent. “Ten years ago a lot of people were saying there would be a generalized epidemic in Asia — China was the big worry with its huge population. That doesn't look likely. But we have to be careful. As an epidemiologist it is better to describe what we can measure. There could be small outbreaks in some areas.”

I agree. To both your points.

I would add that, for me, the point of public ridicule would not be revenge or humiliation, but simple education. It’s a great teaching moment for the public and a great way to reinforce the REAL definition of “safe sex.”

It’s a great way to commend and socially recognize those who did protect themselves by making appropriate lifestyle choices.

I am sure there were a few people here and there who were infected in tragic circumstances; for that I am truly sympathetic.

The up side, however, is that the basic research done on viruses like HIV has given us new insight into cancer and other related diseases.

Funny how that works sometimes. Seems almost by . . . design. Intelligent . . . design.

By that I mean, it seems that for everything man views as a disaster, at a higher level that "disaster" holds at least some good for mankind. Sometimes I get the idea it wasn't us who invented the idea of lemons and lemonade.

BTW, lots of people had it figured out, they just got shouted down when they tried to speak up.

I remember seeing one guy on TV saying these are the major ways a person gets AIDS. He then said don’t do those things and you probably won’t get AIDS.

It was perfectly logical, but he was dropkicked practically out of the studio and made fun of in the media for weeks afterwards. For saying something straightforward such as “don’t have sex with prostitutes, homosexual men or drug users.”

OTOH, the homosexual community was claiming that AIDS was not all that communicable-—therefore, infected individuals shouldn’t be fired, doctors and dentists couldn’t require more precautions in handling their blood during procedures, schoolchildren could not be segregated, etc.-—while at the same time claiming the virus was going to jump all over ordinary heterosexuals and that having sex with certain people had nothing to do with it.

It was insane.

The “lie” Reagan is supposed to have perpetrated was that AIDS was a “gay disease.”

But then and now many people recognized that the disease actually did have a lot to do with certain practices and that those practices were *mostly* confined to the homosexual community.

The thing the homosexual community worldwide has in common with the heterosexual population in Africa (where, even though bad, AIDS still hasn’t become the epidemic they were predicting 20 years ago) is PROMISCUITY.

The homosexual community in America actually seemed to believe that average Americans were as promiscuous as they are, and that simply is not the case. Even if the virus had been introduced more readily into the heterosexual population, it would not have spread even close to the same rate as in the homosexual community. Not to mention there are stark differences in the types of sexual acts that are most common in each population.

Reagan probably also knew AIDS was not the biggest priority (we have finite resources) at the time and thus he did what he thought he could about it and then went on to solving more important issues.

Another of the innumerable areas where he was lambasted by the Left at the time and has later been proven to be completely correct .

My recommendation, however, is to not hold your breath waiting for an apology from The Nation, The New Republic or NPR (or most of the rest of the media, for that matter).

Another “The world is ending ... never mind” story.

The AIDS threat was overblown from the beginning but anyone who said so got hammered. Liberals believe in deterrence when it comes to someone expressing an alternative opinion.

The AIDS threat was overblown from the beginning, just like Global Warming.

The collectivists have long since figured out that humanity can only be properly manipulated of they are facing one terrible crisis at a time, and they’re usually discovered to be hoaxes after a decade or so. Thus, when the coming Ice Age of the 1970s didn’t pan out, we had the Over-Population crisis of the 1980s. When the projected population explosion didn’t occur, we segued neatly to the AIDS crisis of the 1990s. Since Global Warming is the latest rage, we have to abandon the Everyone Has AIDS tactic and promote GW. Once that is debunked, in about 2 more years, we’ll probably find that something new threatens us all. Too many obese people are destabilizing the Earth’s rotation, maybe? Tax on food but only in countries with lots of obese people? Like America, mostly? Sound likely?

It does indeed, although since you have now publicly exposed their strategy you would be well-advised to maintain a low public profile, be sure to keep your concealed carry permit up to date and cajole an unpleasant neighbor into becoming your official food-taster.....the Left's enemies tend to 'disappear' regularly   :-)

True, but the AIDS threat to the homosexual population was downplayed at the same time that it was overblown vis-a-viz the heterosexual population.

Anyone who said anything like “you homosexual guys need to change your ways or you’re all going to get wiped out” was despised and hounded into silence.

Said another way:

Liberal groups have changed their previous threat tactic and now say that there will be no global epidemic of HIV/AIDS. Instead the fake alarm of “global warming” has proven to be a bigger scare tactic, therefore raising more money for liberal/Marx's causes. So, for now, continue to scare the hell out of the people about killing the polar bear!

They have found that fear and (white) guilt are the most effective mechanisms for extracting money from a person's wallet.

The truth has always been a non-starter for them......

This must mean the aids money must have dried up. I guess it is time for them to move on to global change to make a buck.

This appeared last year.
“Top scientists say crisis has been ebbing for a decade
09:28 PM CST on Monday, November 19, 2007
CRAIG TIMBERG / The Washington Post
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The United Nations’ top AIDS scientists plan to acknowledge this week that they have long overestimated both the size and the course of the epidemic, which they now believe has been slowing for nearly a decade, according to U.N. documents prepared for the announcement.’
The article goes on to say the reason for over estimating the Aids epidemic just might have been to raise more money. Hmmmm, ya think?

“But then and now many people recognized that the disease actually did have a lot to do with certain practices and that those practices were *mostly* confined to the homosexual community.”

From the women’s perspective - a woman can only get the diseae from a bad blood transfusion, drug use (dirty needles), or having sex with a bisexual man.

Women in Africa who are coming down with this disease can trace their epidemic right back to homosexual activity as well.

While a small portion of AIDS victims are genuinely “innocent’” (blood transfusion, unsuspecting spouse of a bisexual, child of an AIDS mother) This is greatly a matter of moral vs. immoral values.

Last summer I met a 15 yr. old boy who’s had AIDs since birth.
It is sad to see an innocent pay for the immoral choices of others.

Will this new enlightened view of AIDS cause people to think twice about values? morality?

Somehow I think approaching that subject will still get you the label of “bigot.”

I think they want scientists to figure out a way to cure them without having to give up their lifestyle.

Everything you say is true.

David Horowitz wanted to close down the bathhouses of San Francisco in order to reduce the communication of HIV/AIDS. Gays chose to "live in denial" (a popular liberal stratagem). Liberal politicians and press obliged homosexuals, and Horowitz made absolutely no progress. Liberals and gays won and got what they wanted. Homosexuals died as a result. Another case of unintended consequences.
