Ousted Rep. Bob Barr, R-Ga., is heading over to the American Civil Liberties Union to work on informational and data privacy issues, the organization announced Monday.
The firebrand conservative -- a gun rights advocate, anti-gay rights activist and prosecutor in the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton -- told Fox News on Tuesday that the collaboration is not as strange as it might appear at first blush.
"We have actually worked very closely with conservative groups and with the ACLU on a number of issues over the last few years, very successfully in stopping some of the government snooping programs," Barr said.

This is akin to Obama sitting down with Ahk-mah-gin-i-dad
Yeah, for sure. Since leaving congress, ole Barr's behavior has become more and more eccentric and to put it bluntly, strange. In some ways his behavior reminds me of Carter's which is driven by the bitterness of a failed presidency.
No, this is like the Pope sitting down with the Council of Churches to announce a merger.
The ACLU is despicable. A communist front group first to last.
He really is giving black republicans a bad name.
This is a retread thread from 2002.
So Rep. Barr was a member of the ACLU in 2002. So what? Is he active in the organization circa 2008? Is he still even a member?
I guess the McCain apologists are getting worried.
Exactly. The liberal McCain supporters are panicked.
Oh, and the excerpting here was very selective. From the article:
“On all of the issues we disagree, and there are many ... we decided to move those off the table and focus on those cases on which we agree, and that is to place reasonable limits on government power and to do something to protect personal privacy which is eroding at a phenomenal rate,” Barr said.
So Rep. Barr noted many disagreements with the ACLU. And the ACLU noted several disagreements with Rep. Barr. Yet, he was going to work with them on some issues of mutual concern.
In reading the article, I note that it doesn’t mention his membership in the organization. Did he ever even join? I assume that he did, but the article doesn’t say one way or the other.
The ACLU is a rotten organization. No disagreement there. But even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then.
I have always thought he was a a-hole so no surprise.
Wasn’t the liberals mantra to infiltrate and influence from within, and haven’t they been very successful at it? Although I think Barr has gotten strange in the last several years, some of the conservatives joining liberal organizations may be simple infiltration tactics.
“Please, no one is concerned about some wuss from Georgia who represents people like Howard Stern.”
The fact that articles from 2002 are being posted would seem to call your hypothesis into doubt.
I don’t think Rep. Barr has a chance of winning this election. But he has a good chance of pulling say 5-10% of the vote. Those are votes that McCain supporters see as their welfare entitlement.
He has a problem with the Patriot Act, and the lies which the administration used to sell it to Congress.
Whatever happens, that law needs to be allowed to expire before this election. A Hussein administration with that kind of power, I don’t even want to think about it.
Not really. He’s a Libertarian.
(Hoccch ptui!)
Selective? When posting Fox News articles they have to be excerpted. I posted the first several paragraphs of the article. Nothing selective about it.
To answer your previous, you will note my first statement “Lest we forget.” As in...this happened previously. Nobody was trying to hide that it is a historical topic.
The point is that Barr has worked with a anti-American communist oriented institution instead of working his issues through conservative organizations.
That is despicable and puts him in the same league as McCain, Obama and Hillary.
The knee-jerk support for Bob Barr is amazing.
You said: He has a problem with the Patriot Act, and the lies which the administration used to sell it to Congress.
Is that you Ron Paul?
Barr can go to hell and take Buchanan with him.
I’ll still vote for Barr over McCain any day of the week.
“Selective? When posting Fox News articles they have to be excerpted. I posted the first several paragraphs of the article. Nothing selective about it.”
Yes, selective. You had the choice of what portions of the article to excerpt. You chose those that would tend to most impugn the reputation of the individual in question.
“The point is that Barr has worked with a anti-American communist oriented institution instead of working his issues through conservative organizations.”
So what? So long as a conservative issue and agenda are being forwarded, and that’s what appears to have happened here, who cares? Politics makes very strange bedfellows at times.
“The knee-jerk support for Bob Barr is amazing.”
I’m not a Barr supporter per se. My top 5 choices didn’t make it to the ballot. I might vote for him as the best amongst bad choices, but that’s about as deep as my “support” goes.
I will say this, the knee jerk reaction of those who see conservative votes as a GOP entitlement is something to behold.
“Barr can go to hell and take Buchanan with him.”
Yeah, I know. Those ill-mannered conservatives who won’t line up to take a seat on the Pure Bull Express are such a pain in the posterior (/s).
When I think of he ACLU I think of homosexuals and abortionists... pro Terrorists... nice things like that :)
