Natural Gas Rush in Northeast Opposed!!
Damascus (PA) Citizens ^

Posted on 06/07/2008 3:59:05 AM PDT by finnsheep

The Marcellus Shale play is the latest huge thing in natural gas, considered by some to be a "super giant" gas field. Read more here http://www.petroleumnews.com/pntruncate/246893563.shtml

The edge of the Marcellus Shale in Northeast PA and NY is about 100 miles from NYC, which means the gas needs only a very short trip by pipeline to the major metropolitan centers.

Natural gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels and also is a source for hydrogen for hydrogen powered vehicles.

So here are a bunch of "concerned citizens" planning to oppose it with all their might.

"The Damascus group has plans to pursue all avenues to stop the drilling, which include the use of moratoriums and other legal actions in the courts. It announced at the meeting that the group had enlisted the services of Richard Lippes, a renowned environmental attorney who was instrumental in winning a $129 million lawsuit for residents of the Love Canal section of Niagara Falls, NY, against Occidental Petroleum." You can tell them what you think of their efforts at DCS@mailhosts.net

See post # 8.....

As far as noise, all gas wells are free flowing and are completely silent. Even oil wells that are pumped are done so with electricity and only deliver a whisper for someone standing within a few feet of the well.

These people are complete dishonest liars. And they know it.

These people are liars. All wells are cased all the way to the surface and pressure tested to guarantee there are no leaks.

Any thing in the water beforehand is because of natural communication between formations. There may also have been a few older wells that were drilled many decades ago that have allowed communication. But this is rare and is easily fixed.

But modern methods guarantee that will not happen. These people are patently dishonest.

Yes and no. Natural gas is hard to transport, so it sells for cheaper locally than on the world market.

“Alot of these “meetings” are held at hours of the day when conservatives are working.”

We have remedies for meetings held during working hours, or meetings not publicized.

Show up and demand the meetings be held in the evening. If they don’t acquiesce, throw them out of office with a special election.

Many states have a strong a home-rule government model that allows you to circulate recall petitions and throw the leftists out at any time.

If meetings aren’t posted according to law, states have open meetings laws. It allows you, the citizen, to sue politicians for violating the open meetings law. This includes fines, attorney fees compensation and jail time for these offending hacks. Any ordinances passed at these illegal meetings are also voided. Learn your open meetings law and use it.

And believe me, these leftists are holding illegal meetings all over this country. Every day.

It’s the one law that gives citizens real power over the scheming traitors in local government, and judges can get real tough against these conniving worms.

And one more trick you need to be aware of.

Leftists will hold consensus public meetings. Citizens will be divided into groups and leftist facillitators will manage each group to reach a pre-ordained consensus. This is especially done in matters concerning private property, land-use plans and economic development.

This is illegal for the simple reason that a quorum is no longer present. If you find yourself at such a meeting, stand up and declare it illegal and call the sheriff if necessary.

Yep. A co-worker has had some undeveloped land in the boonies for 30 years, paying taxed for it for that long. Now they have an offer for so much an acre for rights to drill, plus revenue sharing if energy is found. $86,000 isn’t a bad chunk of change.

Does anyone recall the Shoreham nuclear power plant? A completed plant that ran low level tests before full scale operation and was shut down forcing rate payers to fork over billions of bucks.
Location? Bet you can’t guess!

Can anyone tell me if GWB could issue an executive order to ok drilling for oil and natural gas in some of the known reserve locations? I know he probably wouldn't’t but would it work if he did?

And the lucky people to have mineral rights to the land will retire early on the royalties. There will be a stampede to buy land there for that reason alone. Real estate values will go off the chart.

Not likely. Mineral rights typically were sold off in sweetheart deals many years ago.

Where I am from, (Wilkes-Barre), most of the mineral rights belong to the coal companies, and as such, are not transferred with the property deeds. I understand that many areas though, especially in Columbia County, have the mineral rights still on the deeds.

First of all I am a vet who served my country during the Vietnam War. And I am also an environmentalist. So all you who post this bullshit about anyone who is in favor of the environment and concerned about possible negative consequences from gas drilling who want to label us all as commie leftwing radicals, did you serve? Based on my research, there appears to be a need for incredible amounts of water for usage in opening the well and that water will need substantial treatment after that usage or will end up as nothing more than a polluted pond. In areas like where I live, water is at a premium, and the availability of millions of gallons for the drilling process may result in that supply not being available for the public water supply. So, great, you have all these wealthy landowners who will make big bucks while the rest of us will have to pay increasingly high costs for decent water for our households. Just another example of the rich getting richer-the folks who will suffer have only a small lot or rent and will get no part of the proceeds, but, due to the costs of cleaning up contaminated water, will have to pay for the profits of the wealthy. Sounds like the typical American way, the rich, who usually inherited the land and have not done shit to deserve it, get richer, while the middle class and poor get nothing. And let’s talk about conservation, you spoiled overweight me, me, me, American get your fat ass off your riding lawn mower you use to mow a quarter acre, sell that damn gas guzzling SUV that gets 12 miles per gallon, and quit building 4,000 square foot houses and we can save 30-35 percent of our energy costs immediately.

You say that unless someone is a vet who served they can have no say on the subject of gas wells and the environment. Then you proceed to educate us about all the evils of gas well drilling based on YOUR research. What makes you an expert? Because you CLAIM to be a vet?

You joined FR today.

I smell BS.
